Hello-I have a history of Graves Disease, which has now switched to Hashimotos.  On 01 August 2014, my TSH level was 3.780.  I had been taking 25 mcg of Synthyroid prior to that date (for like 2-weeks), which was discontinued 2 days prior to this appointment because the endocrinologist didn't think that I needed it.  The endocrinologist told me that I should redo the labs within 3 months.  I also started taking the supplement Selenium at a dosage of 200 mcg/day (which I have since discontinued).  I started feeling weird and requested that my Primary Care doctor redo my thyroid labs, which he did.  I am very glad for this.  Because my TSH came back at 26.360 on 28 August 2014.  I went back to see the endocrinologist, who recommended that I either take 25 or 50 mcg of Levofloxacin /day.  We selected 50 mcg/day.  The Primary Care physician felt that I should be taking 100 mcg/day.  I will be redoing my labs the 1st week of October.  I would like to know other people's opinions as to whether 50 mcg/day is too low of a starting dosage for this medication.  As an added piece of infomation, I received a thyroid ultrasound a few days ago wich revealed no cancer (YIPPEE! :))  However, the radiologist said that my thyroid looked like a typical pattern associated with Greves Disease.  I feel very confused and would greatly appreciate everyone's input.  Thank you very much for taking the time to response and sorry about such a long question.    Susanna

You asked about levofloxacin. Did you mean levothyroxine? If so, 50 mcg per day is an appropriate starting dose. The medication needs to be started slowly and gradually titrated up in response to what your labs show. Especially with Hashi's, rapid increases in medication can cause your thyroid to go crazy. Twelve weeks is the best interval for re-testing and adjusting, because this is the amount of time it takes for the medication to become fully active in your system.

Yes. Thank you very much that us what I meant. I took PTU for years so this is a real change for me. Thank you very much for the response. I will post an update when I redo my labs.
