Hello all. I was diagnosed as bipolar but can not seem to get stable for any long period of time. I have now been told by my GP that I have hypothyroidism. I've read that this can cause psychological symptoms, or worsen mental illness. I'm worried this has been the missing element. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Hey, I know how you're feeling. Im experiencing mental symptoms of hypothyroidism also. Like you I'm trying to see which is the egg and which is the chicken. Its so many sources that says it does mimic mental illness. I've also heard from others thatost of the time their symptoms disappear once they're optimally and adequately treated. Its days I feel as if I'm losing my mind. Mood swings, brain fog, bad thoughts, paranoia and you name it. If you ever want to talk or vent just email me. Maybe we can try helping each other. All the best

In extreme cases, either hypo- or hyperthyroidism can mimic mental health problems to some extent. If you post your actual lab results here, along with the reference numbers, perhaps we can help sort out the thyroid component for you.

Thanks so much for the replies. I haven't seen the doc yet or any reports/numbers. Was just told over the phone and told to go in for a thyroid ultrasound on Monday. Hopefully will have more info soon! Also planning to move up my psych appt and see what he thinks if this.

That's great, I hope you and your docs can get this sorted out. Let us know how you're doing.
