Been suffering with hypothyroidism for years. My legs swell and ache and feel like cement. I can just about walk. Been told it is not a rheumatology problem and not lymphemema. Tried many different thyroid meds. I CAN'T GO ON LIKE THIS. Has anyone had this problem?

Hi and welcome,
Water retention is a known hypo symptom, do you have your most recent thyroid related blood tests and reference ranges to post ?

Just being on thyroid medications is not enough, you need to be on the correct dose for you for enough time.

Which medications have you tried? what dosage? for how long? what was your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) then ? do you see an endocrinologist ?

I dont have my latest lab results. I have been on many dosages of different of thyroid meds. I am now on 150 mg of troisent and it seemed that the more I took it the worse my legs got. I didnt take it for a couple of days ond I could walk better but of course my levels went down again. Dr just say your levels are ok it has to be something else, but i havent gotten any answers. Endo also say levels are OK and then dont look at my problems.
I went to a Dr who followed the plan of DR Datis Kaharrazian and I am still taking the supplements, I have to get back on track with the diet and see if this helps me any because no one else is.

You should ask for a copy of your results report and keep them as a reference , you can also write on them how you felt and what dosage you took.

150 mcg/day while on tirosint sounds too much for me, this is a gel capsule, it contains very few inactive ingredients and it is absorbed much more than other Levo meds.

If you stop your Levo for couple of days your levels don't go down, they go up, that is because TSH is counter intuitive, if you are hypo your TSH will rise and if you have hyper then your TSH will drop.

You also need to be tested for Hashimoto's disease, it is an autoimmune disease which results in hypo/hyperthyroidism, the tests are TGab and anti TPOab, if either is positive then you have it.

As I said, just taking thyroid medication is not enough, you need to be on the correct dose for you for at least six weeks for the medication start working, you should try and get your TSH around 2.

Good luck and keep us updated on how you are doing .

Re Hashimotos disease. Isn't the treatment for that the same as hypothyroidism, or is it something different? I believe I was told in the past the I had that too? And I think and endo said that it is all part of the same thing.

The treatment is the same, but if you have hashi, that can cause either hypo or hyper.
It is also a good idea to ask for thyroid and neck ultrasound to see whether you have nodules.

Good luck and let us know if you have more questions,
