My doc does TSH, T4 and T3 tests and I have separate numbers for each....

I don't know what your one number means....J

I'm quite sure that's the only test I received. That's what the number said
I'm not for sure I asked for a copy of my results . She said they we're normal ????

To get real results of any kind, you need all 3 above tested. Yes, a doc told me I was normal for 10 miserable years....and I needed thyroid support all along....lots of hard lessons but I'm learning to question and do so much of my own research...J

Maybe someone else can shed light on that number...Are you in the U.S.?

mz worrier, here is a link to a website that explains your TSH test. www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003684.htm.

It explains the test and also gives the normal range. I just popped in when I saw your post. I have also had the TSH test and am on thyroid medication which has brought me to normal levels within two months.

The moderator for Thyroid Disorders, Judy2, will be able to explain this better to you.

Wishing you good health.

Lanie, everything I've read and on thyroid support groups, the T3 and T4 tests are very important...why so many docs test only TSH is beyond many of us.

jaminhealth, I believe the TSH is the first diagnostic test given. Here is a link which explains it better than I can. It describes all these tests and why they are given. www.endocrine.niddk.nih.gov/pubs/thyroidtests/thyroidtests_508.pdf

Read page two specifically.

Thanks for the info Lanie, the info really breaks down what everything means . I can't understand why doctors don't take this more seriously . I've learned you have to truly become an advocate for your own health.

Hi mz ,

Do you take any kind of thyroid related medications ? What symptoms do you have ?

Every one is different when talking about thyroid tests, your TSH is a bit low , when my tsh was 1 I felt hyper and needed to reduce the dose of Levo, ask your doctor to test also for Free T3 , Free T4 and TSH .

If you have hyper symptoms like palpitations diarrhea difficulty sleeping, fast heart rate, tremors, shaking hands and so on, then you might ask your doctor to refer you to an Endocrinologist to treat you !

Good luck and let us know if you have more questions.

Personally, I believe TOO MANY doctors are causing an injustice to their patients with the thyroid issues.....I went 10 long years by those numbers.....symptoms are about 66 give or take that can be thyroid related....J

Hi hypo Hashimoto,
I'm currently not on any thyroid meds my doctor considered my number with the "normal range " so she didn't prescribe me anything.

I am a bit confused as to why I was only tested for 1 when you obviously need all three test.

I have been having hypo and hyper symptoms:
Palpitations , cold hands and feet ,fatigue, no appetite, anemic ,headaches ,my eyebrows stop growing ,no libido, chills ,low grade fevers, insomnia and gerd.

I also told my doctor that my neck had been hurting ,she seemed unbothered.
Based on what I've been reading most physicians seem to not take the disease seriously nor do they understand how it significantly impacts your life.
