I've been to primary care physicians for 25 years about my hypothyroidism and have been on synthroid that long. For the last 5 or so years my temperature ranges strictly between 96 and 97.4. Never, ever higher. I was always cold and hot, cold and hot, lost the outside half of both eyebrows (???), have put on probably 75# in the last three years changing nothing (and I already eat healthy). So last December a new primary care doc where I moved put me on 75mg of Cytomel, all at once. Horror of horrors, within 3 weeks fully 1/2 yes 1/2 my hair fell out! I used to have very, very thick strong hair. Now its very thin, patchy, frizzy and you can see my scalp. I have very light blonde hair. Doc had no clue what was doing it. I looked online and found that you CANNOT start Cytomel at full dose right off. So I immediately stopped it and within 3 days it stopped. Decided to go to Endo. Unfortunately, when my first question was "why does the blood work show my TSH is so out of wack?". He said (MUCH to my surprise) I don't read blood tests. I don't care about numbers. They mean nothing to me.". After the shock wore off, he said that the problem was that I needed T3, or Cytomel. I said, no, no and told him what happened before. He said you have to slowly work up to 75mg. So he started me on 25mg for 2 weeks, 50mg for 2weeks, then the 75s. Not a single hair fell out. All symptoms completely resolved. I lost 55# in 2 months. My temp is now 98.6 all the time. Because I still have 100# to lose he also put me on phentermine about 3 months later and between the Cytomel and Phentermine, the weight is just falling off! And I can't exercise more than a 10 minute walk per day due to medical reasons
. And this is all after a 2 month course of that awful, weight gaining prednisone (which I've been off of now for several months. Lesson learned: Go to an endocrinologist not a family doctor! Good luck. Hope you have the same result!
