Would this be considered a fast growing thyroid nodule?

Hi there,

4 mos ago I had a thyroid scan and it showed a .5 cm nodule in right lobe. Followup scan I just had (4 mos later) is showing that one about the same size but a new 1 cm nodule in left lobe. It HURTS and has for a while now (why I originally went to see ENT).

I am concerned that this popped up so fast as my mother had thyroid lymphoma and anaplastic (medullary)thyroid cancer which took her 3 weeks from diagnosis.

My siblings and I were told we all had a 50% chance of having this cancer and to get tested for this dominant gene but not sure which one it was! I had RET (men1 and 2) as well as a few others tested back in Feb which all came back negative so I thought I was just being all worried for nothing.... until I saw this scan I just had...

All thyroid labs normal except thyroglobulin ab was over 600 a year ago (been creeping up). Will be having all labs repeated this week.

Pretty nervous to say the least

Is this considered fast growing?

The positive TGab indicate that you have Hashimoto's disease.
Do you have a TSH test to share with us ?
If it's high you need to be put on Levothyroxine !
Once on Levo thyroid nodules might shrink, in third of the cases they will shrink, in third they remain with the same size and in third they will grow.
Ask to be referred to Endocrinologist.

Hi there. TSH was fine at 1.74. All other thyroid labs were normal....

Was told by my rheumatologist at Johns Hopkins that high antibodies can also be related to lupus? Just seems pretty high compared to others I've seen.

We are not doctors on this forum, only fellow patients who try to help others through our own personal experience .
Since you have nodules and positive antibodies , I still advice you to see an endo.

I don't know regarding lupus, this is why you need to see a specialist !
By the way some times TSH remains normal for a certain amount of time before it starts to rise with hashi .

Thank you for responding again.

I understand that you are not doctors here, I was looking for support and others who have been through this. I talked to my PCP at the end of the day today (I work with him) and more labs being ordered. Calling endo and ENT tomorrow to set up consults about this asap as they had closed already by the time I got to review report and discuss with PCP.

Apparently back in Oct 2013 my TPOab was also slightly high at 13.1 but not performed since, somehow I missed this.

I hoped someone on here would know what constitutes/defines a fast growing nodule, I have been unable to find answers to this.

Regarding lupus... its common for other raised antibodies and also other autoimmune diseases to pop up given time. This seems to be the case with me and I tell you I am super sick of it. I do see one of the top docs in the USA at Johns Hopkins and also in contact with many who research autoimmune diseases throughout the world I have met through research and advocacy so I am lucky in that department but I tell you endocrinology is not my thing at all.

The report was finalized and the other nodule grew just 1 mm so pretty stable but less differentiated now.

The weird thing is the left side has hurt for long before that nodule showed up, and continues to get worse. Has anyone else had painful nodules develop at all? Seems fairly uncommon but I have found a mention that Hashimoto's inflammation could cause this.
