I have researched alternative ways to helping my thyroid, alongside taking the tablets of course, and wondered if anyone has found anything useful? I have read about gluten free diets and eating more fish can help, but does anyone have any personal experiences of this?

I follow the autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet and am really happy with it. Being GF if you have a thyroid disorder works for most people. The protein in gluten mimics an enzyme in the thyroid. When your immune system sees gluten, it attacks it thinking it's your thyroid, then it starts to attack your thyroid even more.

That being said, everyone is different. I like AIP because after the elimination phase (usually 45-60 days but I did 3 months), you slowly add approved foods back in. It's a great way to identify food intolerances.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I had a food intolerance test last year and nothing really came as a big no but things that I should eat more of and other things less. I also want to improve my cholesterol so the oils and nuts for example, are good for that. I think I will just up the intake of the foods that contain the extra minerals I need and try and limit the not so good!

Depends on what your thyroid disease is. If you have Hashimoto's, selenium can help lower antibodies. That being said, selenium needs to be balanced with magnesium and zinc.

For auto immune issues, gluten free, soy and soy flavonoid free, watch goitrens (especially no raw ones, like raw broccoli). Increase antioxidants.
