Hello everyone

I am so stressed right now and have been for the last 5 weeks, i AM SO SCARED

I am a 35 year old lady ex smoker, packed up a month ago. The early part of January I developed a cough however I was smoking loads more than normal due to festivities. I went to the doctor and he prescribed anitbiotics, said i have pharayngitis and ordered a chest x-ray (I freaked out even more, crying, planning my funeral etc...). My chest xray came back normal.

The cough was suppressed with the antibiotics.

I went back to the dr a fortnight ago as the coughing re-occured again and he gave me cough medicine, I have only used it twice. The coughing has since taken a back seat...

My issue now is that it feels like my throat is closing but when I breathe with my mouth open I know I am getting air, my throat is scratchy and when I breathe in it feels like I have been sucking mints it the 'cool sharp air' that is causing me to have this scratch. The lower part of my throat burns now constantly, when I sleep there is no sensation, when I wake I can feel the burning when I breathe, the pain is around the voicebox then lower throat then goes away, I then breathe in and can feel this horrible feeling, it feels like there is a tear in my throat, almost like you have a cold coming and your throat starts to sting and hurt.
I have also developed a tight feeling in my upper throat that sounds like wheezing, I then use my asthma pump (bought online and never been diagnosed with asthma but it works and the wheeze type sound goes away). I have had croup and pneumonia in my younger days too. I have the need to clear my throat constantly also now and it hurts to swallow saliva but eating is no problem swallowing.

I have also had my gallbladder removed 15 years ago

My real worry is could this be lung cancer or throat cancer? I have been googling throat cancer all morning and all the symptoms are like mine, constant sore throat... I am so sick of holding my throat to breathe in deeply to avoid this burning sensation... there is no swelling or sore to the touch on my throat

Sorry for the long message but I am terribly concerned and any advise would be helpful...

Hi Kay ,

I am very sorry to hear about your struggle , but this is thyroid forum and not related to smoking .

Anyway, to check your thyroid gland , whether it is hypo or hyper, ask to be tested for TSH,Free T3 and Free T4.

Once you have those - in case you not yet do - post the results here and we will be happy to help you interpret them.

Best wishes ,
