Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this thyroid forum, so please bear with me.
For the last two years I have experienced symptoms that my GP said were ' normal' for a woman of my age , 56.
Finally when they became so debilitating I couldn't cope any more and told them I had had enough they did blood tests.
My symptoms, excessive weight gain, hair thinning, enough so my hairdresser became worried!, sweating so badly from my head, face and back that I stopped going out and sat on towels at home, constant diahorrea, skin so dry my knuckles and hands were splitting, memory issues that made me think I was going loopy, but worst of all excessive tiredness that totally overwhelmed me, I could easily sleep 18-20 hours a day and still be exhausted.

My first blood test came back with a level of 34, no explanation of what that means but a referral to the hospital, and started me immediately on Carbimazole 4 a day.
6 weeks later the consultants appointment was taken by a very young Chinese doctor, whose English was so poor I could hardly understand him, but suffice to say he told me that none of my symptoms had anything to do with my thyroid and if I lost some weight I would soon feel better, they would see in in 3 months!!!!!!!

Fuming is not the word.

So I carried on taking the Carbimazole as prescribed, having a blood test every month or so and it came down to 12 which I was informed was 'normal'.
I must add here I have two other conditions for which I take huge amounts of medication, please excuse the list.
Every day because of Chronic Degenerative Disc Disease and Fibromyalgia I take....
8 paracetamol
6-8 Tramadol
3- Propanalol
3 - Amytriptalyne
1 -Omoprazole
1- Bedroflumethazide
4- Carbimazole
2- Fluoxetine
Plus OraMorph as needed.

When I read the symptoms it sounds more like I have an under active thyroid but as I have read in several places the symptoms are not always the same for everyone.
So now I feel lost I am waiting to go back to the hospital and see the consultant again and have already decided that I am going to insist on seeing the main man, but what to say I have no idea.

So 5 weeks ago I decided to try weight watchers I have lost weight before with this system and it works very well for me, the first week I lost 5 pounds, great, I was on my way. In the last 3 weeks I have put on 7 pounds and am now above my start weight ????

Sorry for the rant folks but I am just so fed up I don't seem to be able to get any answers or results and I just don't want to play anymore, does anyone have any suggestions? Please.

Hi and welcome to forum,

First thing to mention is that each time you go for blood work, insist on being tested for TSH, Free T3 and Free T4, this is a full thyroid panel.

The most important is TSH, since it is the hormone made by the pituitary gland and controls the thyroid gland.

Also each time you perform blood tests, you should ask your doctor for a copy of the results, once you have it, write on it the dosage of thyroid medication you were taking and how you felt.

When you say that your levels were 34, do you mean Free T3 ? or Free T4? or something else ?

TSH goes counter intuitive, so if you are hyperthyroid your TSH will become low and if you are hypothyroid, your TSH will eventually become high.

If you have the actual results of your blood test, please do post them with reference range as they appear on the report!

Another important issue is to be tested for thyroid antibodies, there are three of them, first two are TGab and antiTPOab, if either is positive then you have hashimoto's disease, which basically can cause both hypo and hyper.

The third one is TSIab, which is the cause for Grave's disease, which causes only hyperthyroidism.

It would be great also to perform neck and thyroid Ultra Sound to see whether you have nodules on your thyroid gland or soft tissues of your neck.

Hope this helps, good luck and keep us posted ,
