I was hoping I could get some opinions on my thyroid levels. Prior to meds my ft3 was 3.0,ft4 1.14. My tsh seems to fluctuate between 1.7 and 2.5. No tpo or thyroglobulin antibodies.

Doctor put me on 3/4 grain of naturethroid. Due to still having cold hands and feet he increased to 1 grain without testing levels. Levels were tested 4 weeks later on 1 grain (per my request) and they were: ft3 3.0, ft4 .97. Tsh not measured. So ft3 no change, slight decrease in ft4.

He then increased to 1 1/2 grains. At this point I started noticing my hair was falling out and I was having pain in thyroid area and chest tightness when I ran. Levels were tested and they were ft3 3.0, ft4 1.04 and tsh .663. Again, no change in ft3 and ft4 up a little. Tsh way down.

I have since went off naturethroid. Will test levels in a few more weeks. No ache in thyroid or tightness in chest when running. Do you think I went hyperthyroid on meds? Also, did I even need meds in the first place? I do have to say that my cold hands/feet went away on meds and are now freezing again.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi k07,

The tightness in chest and ache is because you were hyper, good that you went off naturethroid.

Is the doctor who gave it to you an Endocrinologist? a TSH of between 1.7 to 2.5 is optimal, so I think there was no reason to give you the NDT in the first place, we need to see the reference ranges for the Free T3/4.

You need to see an Endocrinologist who in turn will give you the right conclusion as to whether you have a thyroid condition or not based on your blood tests, and he will give you the right medication and dose, some people do not tolerate natural desiccated thyroid hormones because they contain both T3 and T4 and because the ratio of them in it differs from that in humans - they have much higher amounts of T3 than what we need - , some people do feel well on it, only on it, however.

Best of luck k07,

Sorry, ranges are:

Ft3 2.0-4.4 I was 3.0
Ft4 .82-1.77 I was 1.04

My levels never changed much (ft3 not at all) on naturethroid. Ft4 was 1.14 (same range) when not on meds. My tsh was really the major change - took a nose dive.

This was an integrative doc.

That is natural since TSH goes counter intuitive.

As I said above, you need to see an Endo !

Best of luck,
