Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help understanding my labs. My doc went over them with me but didn’t say much other than to take NP thyroid. I’m trying to understand what my body is doing.

Lab results:

Thyroid Peroxidase 59 (ref 0-34)
Thyroglobulin Antibody 9.8 (ref 0.0-0.9)
TSH 2.04 (0.3-4.00)
Free T4 0.74 (0.30-1.90)
Free T3 2.3 (2.1-4.0)
Reverse T3 14.9 (9.2-24.1)
Vitamin D 26.3
SHBG 128.3 (24.6-122.0)

I had some challenges this year and stopped taking the naturthroid I was on earlier. I’m trying to understand if these levels are very bad. Originally my doctor said I had borderline Hashimotos. Thanks for any insight you can give.

The Hashi antibodies are positive which means that you have hashimoto's disease,
There is no cure for hashi but you do not need to treat it, rather you need to treat the resulting hypo/hyperthyroidism, if you were on thyroid hormones prior to the blood test then hashimoto caused you to be hypothyroid (under active thyroid), if the test was done while being on naturethroid then you were on the proper medication and dose since your TSH is very optimal and you are balanced properly, on the other hand if you stopped taking the naturethroid prior to the blood test then I would suggest waiting at least six weeks off of naturethroid and then to repeat them, the tests that you need to perform are : TSH, Free T3/4 , reverse T3 is meaningless , and the antibodies are either positive or negative and you have them positive and there is no need to repeat them.

Best,

hypoHashimoto, Thank you for your response. I had been on naturethroid last year but on nothing for this whole year. The testing was done recently after not having thyroid medication for a year. Both my Thyroglobulin Antibodies and Thyroid Peroxidase increased in that time. Does that increase mean anything or do both of those levels not matter once they are positive?

They do not matter once they are positive, there is no correlation between how high the antibodies and how sever your hypo/er is !!!

I would suggest keep monitoring the TSH,FT3 and FT4 every 3 months!

The modern view point: Hashimoto can be treated with diet. Depending on severity, It can actually be cured sometimes.

Since your antibodies are not very high yet, they might drop to 100% normal if you go 100% gluten free.

Its a choice that few want to do, but does make a difference. Its now proven. Took me year to finally do this.

Your vit D is on the low side per most ranges.

Thanks for your input astroman. I’ve actually been gluten free the last few years, eat organic, etc. I’ve been supplementing with Vitamin D and even worked in a greenhouse and my levels keep going down. It sounds like a gf diet is working for you. That is great! I have felt better eating that way too. smile

There are many things that probably cause hashimoto, the thyroid is a very touchy gland. Foods, chemicals, whole body bacterial infections, lyme disease ect.

I improved after 20 years of getting worse and adding medication every 6 months. To top it off, my thy nodule known for ten years completely dissolved from removing inflammation causing foods, I had extensive food testing.

"Not treating Hashimoto" is non-sense old school thought. We were once all told that, and its slowly changing as positive results can happen.
