Hello everyone,

I am very new to this community but being recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's has led me to seek any support I can. I am on the cusp of being 19, so being diagnosed so early in my life has been a bit devestating to me. I have no family history of autoimmune diseases, the most likely cause is thought to be the vehicular collision I was in nearly 5 years ago.

My hair has been falling out consistenly although I have been prescribed and taking Synthroid (25mg) as well as birthcontrol (Lo Loestrin), and I still feel incredibly fatigued, depressed + anxious, and am FREEZING all the time. I drink so much tea and wear so much thick clothing but it doesn't seem to be helping a lot.

I was also diagnosed with anemia and so take iron supplements as well.

I find it very difficult to go to the bathroom properly (I apologize if that's TMI), and I'm not sure how I should be treating my other symptoms and if diet will also have an impact on any of this?

Other medications I take include Propanolol, Prozac, Naproxen, and occasionally Mirtazapine.

Any and all help addressing this is so appreciated and I apologize for this post being so long.

I'm sure someone will come along with some good suggestions, but I think a lot of your questions are best answered by your doctors. I know your diagnosis is very new and overwhelming, but your best bet is talking to your doctor's office.

Hi,

25 mcg per day is a very low dose and most probably you need an increase in the dose,
you have to perform blood tests to know if you need a higher dose,
those tests are ; TSH, FREE T3 and FREE T4, you need to perform these tests at least six weeks since starting the medication or after any dose change.

Once you have the results for TSH, you are invited to post them here and we will be happy to advice you more.

It would be great if you can consult with an Endocrinology doctor who will request the tests and advice you better.

Best,

Hello, I'm not really new here, for years, I've read many threads and I rarely make comments on here, but I can tell you that your best friend is the Levothyroxine, never stop taking them. I've been on them since 2009, and recently I was off them for nearly 2 months and it wrecked havoc on my body. The symptoms you are experiencing is normal, once the Levothyroxine really has a chance to get in your system the symptoms will go away, only your low iron symptoms will remain until you get treatments for that, but the thyroid issues will go away.

Just know this, never let any doctor talk you out of getting and taking Levothyroxine, you will have to take them for life, there is no known cure for thyroid issues as of now, and the only thing test results can tell your doctor is rather to keep you on the same dose, increase the dose, or decrease the dose, but never and I do mean NEVER take you off the Levothyroxine. You will need them for life even if your levels show consistent positive results, that is because you are on the right hormone producing dosage, not because the thyroid is better. A doctor recently did that to me and I'm still slowly recovering from that.

Nevertheless, thyroid issues can affect over 300 areas of the body, so your iron could get better with the Levothyroxine as well if it's a result of your thyroid condition.

Nice to meet you

Hi Victoria,

I echo what HypoHashi recommended regarding getting tested frequently. I was recently diagnosed with Hashimotos as well and am also always freezing, ha (and not so ha). My LLMD recommended compounded T4/T3 as I had a hard time tolerating Synthroid. But if you can handle it okay, I imagine your dosage needs to be adjusted. You also might try taking iodine drops, it helped me a lot at first with the low body temp issues.

Hang in there
