Hi everyone,
Can someone help me, i'm a british citizen on holiday in the USA but I've left my colazal behind.
I take 6 tablets per day but the pharmacy here tells me that i need a prescription to get it here.  Any ideas how i can get a presrciption or can I get through 12 days without taking.
Any suggestions are welcome.
I'm in fresno, california at the moment.

Try going to a 24 hour urgent care clinic and see if you can see a doc. there that will give you a prescription for it.

I wouldn't risk going that many days without your medication. Definately go to the urgent care of the local hospital or clinic and have them call your doc back home if they have to. Colazal can be rather pricey here (not sure how it is in your country) so only get what you will use in that time so that way you're not spending too much money.

I've just rang the clinic, they've just told me that it will cost $125 for a prescription, its expensive.
I'm thinking about having it posted to me, can anyone see a problem with medication being posted to USA

Bal -- can you call a local GI and tell them your story; maybe they can give you some samples? I'm sure they must have some on hand. Try this before you post any here; it might be just as expensive. I mailed something to Dave and it took about 7 days plus expensive.

I don't know if there will be a problem shipping it but I wouldn't think that there would be. You need to compare the cost of shipping it overnight to the $125 it would cost to get it in a local pharmacy. ALSO, think about the doses you will miss before it gets here. Will this send you into a flare??? That's not worth the risk. I'd spend the $125 to get it right now.

thanks everyone who posted.
I've tried the doctors above, they all want me to come for some kind of registration which ranges from $90 to $180.
I've just checked the DHL rates from UK to USA, its 45 (uk pounds) or approx. $90.
I'm trying to find a cheaper courier.

Try different pharmacies too. Walmart is usually cheap. Honestly, you have no idea what problems you will have with the couriers. Do you have insurance in England? Can you get reimbursed? Can you try calling your doctor back home and seeing if he/she can call a doctor here so you can avoid the appointment? Your health isn't worth messing with!!!

I like the idea of having your doc contact a doc here - professional courtesy - and asking about samples. You never know when someone from the US could be visiting England in a similar situation.

If not, I'll pay the $125 to get the meds here. You'll have them right away and avoid risking a flare. That alone would be worth the US$35.

I hope it all works out for you!

My friend and I were just discussing this, and he to suggested talking to a pharmacist or two. I'm sorry you are having such difficulty Bal -- we don't make it easy over here. If you don't get it resolved, maybe I can talk to my GI tomorrow and see if he can talk to a doc down in Fresno to get you the meds. Let us know how you are doing.

Unfirtunately, I couldn't talk to anyone in England because of the 8 hour difference. I've sent an email to my daughter to see if she can do anything from that end. I'm beginning to think that my best option is to see the doctor at the Urgent Health clinic here tomorrow morning. I think to arrange my doctor back home to talk to a doctor here is going to take couple of days because of the time difference.

My travel health insurance does not cover repeat prescriptions so the money spent will not be re-imbursed.

The pharmacy I went to just said that they can't do anything without a prescription.

Bals, check out the internet for a Canadian on-line pharmacist.  That seems to be where most Americans go for their cheap(er) medications these days.   The shipping will be a whole lot less as well.

Good luck.

Hi everyone,
A very big thank you for your support through this, this forum is a wonderful place, I did not for one moment felt alone with my dilemma in a foreign country. My mum, who travelled with me was also impressed that I was getting this information and support like I was at home.

The medicine did NOT arrive, though my children had sent it via registered post to arive on the third day. I havn't chased the reason behind it yet.

After the fifth day without medication I decided to forget about it and enjoy the wedding i was attending. I was fine for 11 days without colazal but on the 12 th day there were signs of a flare, by the 14th day when I got home on Tuesday I was in middle of a flare. I am still bleeding but I saw signs of U-turn today so hopefully it'll be under control by Monday when i go back to work.

Carol, I had lovely time in California, even though it was rainning most of the time, when the sun came out everything just felt so beautiful.

Thank again everyone.
