I was just wondering if there was anyone here with some background in biology that would like to chat. I've been reading a lot of papers lately on the effects of lifestyle and alternative medicine on the etiology of UC, and would really like someone to discuss things with, such as experimental design, statistical analysis (which I'm weak in), interpretation of results in context of other studies, etc. Nothing formal, just someone to bounce ideas and criticisms off of once in a while. I talk to my fiance about it, but he's a computer engineer, and can't help me out much, lol.

I'd be interested in discussing the merits and weaknesses of various popular "remedies" like the Specific Carbohydrate Diet too.

Anyone game?

I feel like a long time ago I saw someone in here who said he was a biologist of some sort, but I don't know if he posts any more, and I can't remember his name. A search returns nothing, so maybe I'm just crazy.

I think there was a pharmacy school student posting last spring with name "Blue Key", who was very interested in the scientific study of UC. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Thanks for the suggestion... but I couldn't find anyone named "Blue Key" in the search or the member list. Maybe s/he unregistered?
Diagnosed summer of 2006 with ulcerative proctitis; was flaring for a few months, seems to have subsided for the last two weeks. We shall see how long that lasts...

Hi Tethya-

I'm a research scientist (immunology with emphasis on infectious disease).

I don't know much about alternative medicine or the SCD diet though. But I can talk about experimental design!

Tethya,

I am a PhD student in ecology. I mostly study plants, but I feel like I have enough biology background to read UC papers and discuss results. I'm pretty good in experimental design and stats. I sometimes read UC papers and usually understand them well enough to learn something. Like you I read these papers in a vacuum without anyone to discuss them with and would enjoy someone else's perspective. I am constantly thinking about causes, lifestyle, and diet so it seems like were interested in similar things. I'd me interested in reading papers semi-regularly and discussing them.
me: 28 year old male
diagnosed: pancolitis 2-13-2007
drugs: asacol
occupation: grad student (ecology)

Bump.

I wish there were a private message function with this forum, so I didn't have to do this until Carlton comes back and sees this...

There was a person who was going to be doing research on IBD.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.
