What a way to start the New Year. I have been in remission for almost 10 months, and today I had blood on the toilet paper.  My heart just sank. I have never been in remission for more than 9 months, and i thought maybe this time I would make it a year. It seems I flare every Christmas. Tis the season I guess.  I am going to call my doctor on Wednesday to get an appointment to see him. I am pretty well discusted right now.  Thanks for letting me vent.

Janice,
Sorry to hear your news. Have you been eating more, especially sweets/treats/alcoholic bevs. than you usually do-especially cause it is that time of year(Thanksgiving thru the Christmas season)? I found I usually flared this time of year too, and I attributed it to that. Hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I have been eating alot of sweets. Sometimes when i feel good, I take to many liberties. I have gained 7 lbs since Thanksgiving. Last Christmas same thing happened to me. Guess, I have to be more careful

Sorry to hear that Janice. I had the same thing happen to me. I noticed blood this past Friday after no blood and very few symptoms since around last May/June. I, too, have been eating more sweets and having an occassional glass of wine after not having any alcohol in a long time. I just had a glass of champagne, too which probably wasn't the best choice, but oh well. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Janice...totally sucks you're flaring again. What other symptoms were you "suspecting" before the bleeding started?

Please ask the doc to reconsider rectal meds to help get things under control quickly.

It's not the sweets that started your flare....my opinion.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Quincy, my symptoms before the bleeding were stomach gurgling and mucous on the stool. Even when I would just pass gas on the toilet, mucous would come out. I will ask about the rectal meds, but in the hospital last year they gave my rowasa and i did not tolerate it to good, it made my symptoms worse. So, I will see what he says.
Sherry, sorry to hear that you are bleeding. I also hope it is just a minor blip for you as well.
Thanks and take care

I agree with quincy. Rectal meds at the first sign of problems can make a HUGE difference. If you can't retain the Rowasa, I'd ask your doctor for prescriptions for a couple other choices: Canasa suppositories and Cortifoam. The Cortifoam would only be for short-term use but it could get the bleeding under control fast and then you could taper off and replace it with the Canasa.

That's my two cents. I think it's worth talking to your doctor asap so you can nip this before it has a chance to get worse. At this point you can definitely get it under control! :)

Jano...you could ask the doc for a script of dicyclomine...start with the 10mg. It's an antispasmodic and will help with some of the symptoms. I've used it for the past 19 years...awesome med for me.

I'm in a teeny flare at this time as well...started early last week and was obvious to me on Thursday...the rectal pain during bms (white-knucklers) and butt throbbing during the day is my clincher. The excess gas and then increased bms was definitely an inconvenience.
I started the enemas nightly on Thursday, the frequency has stopped as has the rectal pain during bms as of yesterday. So, they still work nicely for me.

Yes, I still have discomfort when I first use the enemas, my gut gurgles during the night when the flare is still happening...but I'll take that over a continuing flare.

Please at least try the enemas again....maybe ask the doc for the 2gram dosage to start if too much 5ASA causes you discomfort.

The other option is to use the Canasa 3X daily and proctofoam during the night.

Give them a fair try....

Just a quick update on me...For 3 days now, I have seen no sign of any blood. I am now thinking it was a minor blip or maybe even a fissure. Keep fingers crossed

I hope for you it was just a blip.  My GI always tells me not to be too concerned with a little blood on the tp.  Only if accompanied by other symptoms is it a reason for concern.  I know for me - I suffer terribly from hemorhoids - and the blood is usually caused by that or a fissure.  A little hydrocortisone cream does the trick.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you continue to feel good.

I agree with Kim about sweets/treats being related to the flare-ups. I am sure that is not the case with everyone, but it was for me during this past holidays. Glad to know you are feeling better.

Hi Jano We meet with the neurologists on Monday. They have maximised her seizure medication and it has made a massive difference, thank God.They want to do another MRI and other tests in next few weeks. They are worried that her condition has changed so much over past 3 months, but they are doing everything to find the reason why. Theym seem to think that its not a degenerative brain disease but maybe coming from damage her brain suffered when she had the heart failure episodes. So we are praying that the next few months bring us good news and her conditions doesn't deteriate anymore.
She is such an inspirational little girl, us guys only think we've got it rough!!Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers.I will keep you posted on how she is doing.
My thougghts and prayers are with you all
