Hi Everybody,
I have been diagonised with ulcerative colitis in May '07 and since then Iam not having milk and milk products. My doctor suggested that I can have Lactose free milk instead. I have hypothyroid. So I was adviced not to take soy milk. I have been taking Lactaid Milk from June. I wanted to know if this is correct. I read that Lactose free milk avoids sugar in milk. What are you all substituting for milk.
One more thing I am on vacation in India. If I can take Lactose free milk, does anyone of you know where can I get it in India. Here I see only Silk Soy milk..
Looking for some positive answers.
Thanks in advance,

Medicines currently using:
Colazal - 3x 3 times a day
Prednisone - 20mg (my doctor is going to reduce 15mg and 10mg later)
Rowasa enema - nightly once
Iron - 3 times a day
Folic Acid - Once a day
Synthroid - 100mg (Hypothyroid)
One a day Women's

This differs amongst us. Some are lactose intolerant, others aren't. I have no problem with dairy, others get bloating, gas or diarrhea from it. You pretty much have to see for yourself. Lactaid should be a good substitute for you.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Intolerant to Asacol and rectal mesalamine preparations.
On Prednisone then Entocort 2001-2006 with only short periods off.
Current meds are Colazal, Azathioprine and Remicade.
In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

If you aren't lactose intolerant, you shouldn't have to necessarily restrict your dairy (including milk) intake just because you have UC. Unless you know dairy affects you negatively, I don't see a reason to avoid it. I have heard that dairy can make diarhea worse, but it doesn't seem to affect me at all. Of course, you may want to check with your doctor if he/she told you to avoid it.

I have used the lactose-free nonfat and 1% lowfat milk sucessfully for years. Also eat Brown Cow or Stonyfield Farm yogurt + lowfat, low salt cheeses like Gruyere & Emmentaler. It's not only lactose that disagrees with me, but high butterfat content does, too. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

I am lactose intolerant, along with having UC. I drink only Lactaid milk, as I don't love Soy milk. It's ok... but I prefer the Lactaid milk. I also eat the Lactaid ice cream!

Aside from that, I still eat dairy when I want to. I just take a Lactaid pill with the meal. My GI said there is no problem with using Lactaid pills and products with UC.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

I have met lactose intolerant people on the raw milk farm and they say they can drink raw milk.
It was explained that pasteurization kills something in the milk that makes lactose easy for
us to digest. Sorry I can not remember the specifics.
LOTS of friendly bacteria in raw milk that is why I just started drinking it.
Hopefully good for UC.
Diagnosed Colitis 1990.
Current Meds Asacol x4
twice a day.
Pred for flares.
I still have my colon THANK YOU GOD!!!

I've been lactose intolerant since 7th grade. It was awful when I was diagnosed. I couldn't even have a bite of cheese. However, now that I'm in remission I can have cheese and yogurt and stuff and when I want ice cream or something like that I take the lactaid pills. I didn't have much faith in the pills because the first time I tried them I was flaring and they didn't work. I recently tried them again and they do the trick.
Good luck :)

Diagnosed in September 2004

I love milk! However, when I have D, it's just not a good thing for me to drink milk - one doctor also told me not to drink milk when flaring. So, when I'm flaring - I limit my milk intake. When I'm not flaring - I drink as much as I want.
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003
Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Aciphex, Effexor XR, Forvia and a Probiotic
Osteopenia (hip and spine) from prednisone use.  Started Azathioprine because I was steroid dependent.

I don't ever have any diarrhea. But when I have what is questionable as to whether it is a flare I just have tons of gas and pressure low in the pelvic area, and a lot of bloat. Most of the gas is late at night and early in the morning. And more than one bathroom trip a day, sometimes 3. I've noticed also that things heavy with gravy or sauce give me fits. Have to avoid them. This stuff drives me crazy. But I've also had a lot of female issues all this past year and have had to have biopsies and treatment for a precancerous condition and wonder if what I am experiencing actually is irritation from the procedures I have had to have done. This started in early December and that is when I had to have a major procedure and then another nearly 3 weeks later. But I love Lactaid milk. But I also buy acidophilus milk also. It is hard to find in some stores but I have success once in a while with finding it at Kroger in a gallon jug, sometimes just half gallons. You might want to try it.

I use Lactaid milk w/ my cereal but I cook w/ regular 2% milk. Icecream kills my tummy...horrible cramps and bloating so I know I atleast have a dairy sensitivity.
