Easy question this:

What is the current advice for taking azathioprine as a man while trying to concieve?

My consultant said in an ideal world you wouldn't be taking any drugs, but that I wasn't in an ideal world! His advice was to stay healthy first - although as expected he wouldn't be drawn into saying everything would be fine.

There is some advice on the web about discontinuing use 3 months before trying - but again I wouldn't want to be sued, so if I was writing an article that's what I'd say. From all my research on the internerd there has been one paper written that did indicate the possibility of increased birth defects, but the sample group was small.

Has anybody been in my situation? Or can anybodt relay any opinions from health professionals?

Thanks.

Hi Nathan,

I was in your situation about a year ago. I spoke with my GI and the head of pharmacy at work (I'm a manager at a hospital - comes in handy!) and they both said the only risk is a possible low sperm count but that "birth defects" aren't really anything to be conerned about. You are correct when you say that pharma companies list every possible side effect to avoid a law suite even though the chances of most of them occuring are  very slim.

Anyways, for what it's worth I was on Imuran (still am) and my wife and I have two beautiful and healthy 10 week old girls.

Also, I have felt 100% for several months. It took the Imuran a while to start working but I feel great!

Best of luck

Hi,

We are kind of in the same boat.  My husband has been on azathioprine and we just found out we are having a baby.  We hadn't heard anything from his GI doctor about there being any problems with it, but when we researched it on the internet...I kind of freaked out.  I have ready almost every piece of literature out there and it looks like only one study is cited as to the reasons a man should not be on the medicine while trying to have a child.

It helps to know that someone out there has had a successful outcome!

We talk to his doctor on Monday so hopefully he will have input.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. My wife and I just had a baby girl (Eden born on Dec. 29, 2007) and everything is fine. I've been on Azathioprine for a long time, and had been during conception. I was actually wanting to wait until I was off the drugs, but God's will be done.

I forgot to add that I pray fervently that Edie doesn't get my gastrointestinal genes.

I asked my doc about this last time.  He said go ahead.  He said he has a lot more assurance these days about the drugs than in the past (not sure why he does.)  We are probably going to start thinking about it this spring.
