One of our family favorites however we have avoided it since my son's diagnosis. His PA mentioned she believes there is a kernel-free popcorn out there somewhere...Has anyone "discovered" this?

Thx in advance

Interesting! I doubt I'd ever be able to find it in shops, though.

I haven't had popcorn for years, and I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to try even this. For me, it's like eating nails and razor blades.

Popcorn? What is that? Oh yes, I remember, it's that stuff my kids love to eat as we watch movies, and that stuff other people eat at the movies. I have not had it since Nov 1998 tongue tongue

Ha! I don't eat it either but last night I couldn't resist. My daughter made some and boy did it smelllllll goooood! Of course I'm paying for it a bit today :( Kernel free would be awesome but, at least for me, it's not exactly the kernels (though they do hurt coming out sometimes), it's the popcorn itself. I don't do well with anything corn.

I remember having this when I had braces. My orthodontists gave it to me. I'm not sure where to get it though.

I have seen this in the grocery store.  It's in the aisle with the chips, pretzels, etc.  It's hull-free and it comes in regular and cheese flavors.  I've never eaten it, though, so I can't vouch for the taste.  I will look for it when I am at the grocery store this weekend and will pop back on with the brand name.

Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

hmmmm, I would love some too! The website listed above says it is virtually hull-free, but if you keep reading, it says the hull is super thin and and when popped, it shatters into smaller pieces than most other popcorn. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

Expecting....I wish you knew the name of that stuff. I'll have to check out that aisle next time I'm at the store.
Best Wishes,

another really good option is Pirate's Booty- it's like puffed corn & rice things, white cheddar cheese falvored... they're all natural, baked, & REALLY good. You can find it in the snack aisle & in the health food section There's no kernels, no hulls, absolutely no picky stuff! And believe me when I say it's easy to digest- lord knows I eat enough of it!

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade infusions
Imuran- 100mgs/day
Prednisone- 10mgs/day

Another vote for Pirate's Booty... that stuff is awesome for snacking.

I used to love popcorn and my family would eat it by the bowlful on Sunday evenings, after church. (We would each have our own large bowl!) I very rarely eat it now. Oddly enough, I don't miss it that much, although it sure does smell good while it's popping.

Hmm Pirate's Booty huh? Anything like Johnny Depp's (sorry couldn't pass the chance) Sounds like a good alternative even if it has nothing to do with Depp... I will look in the chips aisle as Expecting suggested. I do believe it is mostly about the aroma :) Thanks all for the feedback.

I don't think you'll find it in a regular grocery. I found it at my local organic market - a Wild Oats.

I'm a lucky one. I have never liked popcorn. No one has ever understood this. I do like pirate booty though! The only thing i have found in the regular grocercy store is a puffed corn. Much fattier than popcorn (from what my popcorn loving family has told me) not as good.

My orthodontist gave me some one time, but I have to say it was kind of bland. I haven't really eaten popcorn in 5 years only a few pieces every now and then. I also believe it's near the chips aisle.

I use to eat popcorn all the time. Since I was diagnosed I haven't had it and miss it completely.

I'm curious, though. Is it that bad to eat it or is it different for everybody?

WhiteSox1,

It's just the fact that the kernels are hard, sharp, and indigestible. Even though some people might not notice any difference in symptoms, I don't think that shards of popcorn kernels scraping along an ulcerated colon could ever be a good idea. I can imagine that when you're in remission it might be okay though.

I'll have to check that out... I have this vague recollection of popcorn... Oh how I loved it... Then I got diagnosed with this UC thing and I realized it no longer loved me.... *sigh*

I've eaten popcorn several times recently and didn't notice any worsening symptoms. When I was really sick, I did avoid it. Maybe you could just try a little bit at first to see if it affects you?
