Has anyone here had a flare up related to use of ibuprofen or aspirin. The reason i ask is because i'm getting dental surgery tomorrow and i have been told that i will need to take Ibuprofen to reduce swelling . I'm getting the pin that holds my front crown removed and it involves getting stitches in my gums after they get it out.

My GI told me that short-term use of NSAIDS/ibuprofen doesn't affect UC. It's the long-term use that can lead to problems. I would think you'd be fine if you just have to take it for a few days. I take Aleve about once or twice a month with no problems. Good luck with the surgery!

Ah I miss Ibuprofen! Recently I had a horrible sore throat and sinus infection. I broke down and took 2 ibuprofen. Not joking the next day I had blood in my stool. I'm not sure if it was the ibuprofen or not but I decided not to risk it again.

Do you have to take it for an extended period of time? Maybe you can take it just a few time to get the swelling down??

In some people, Nsaids can cause them to flare instantly (like me) and others are ok taking a few doses before it messes with their Uc. I can not tolerate any sort of Nsaid - it causes instant bleeding for me. However, I do still break down on occasion and pop an anti-inflammatory because of other issues.
Oh and good luck on your oral surgery - I shudder just thinking about it!

I tolerate NSAIDs without bleeding or discomfort. I always take them with food. They're the only thing that works for the joint pain. A few months ago, I decided to try to stop taking the Naprosyn. By 10 that evening, I could barely walk and couldn't sit or lie down. The only relatively comfortable position was standing. I couldn't sleep or think for the pain, and my docs tell me I have a very high pain tolerance.

So yeah, I take them My GI said as long as they don't bother me, it's okay. I really do need to be able to walk.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
