uuugh, I have put on 15 pounds about 5 of them over the holidays and I am just so puffy and hate it!  I am going to join weight watchers but is it even possible to lose weight while on pred?  I do have some additional weight I wanted to lose and I don't want to gain anymore.    I am going to mention to my doc when I see him this thursday but he told me I would probably gain 10 to 20 while on the pred.....so i'm sure that is not his main concern and really shouldn't be mine but I am just so miserable.......I went to the gym twice last week and will be going as much as I can this week, hope to go 4 times.

I constantly want to eat and not stuff that is good for me either.
any thoughts appreciated.

Beth - Yes, it is possible to lose weight on Prednisone. I did Weight Watchers one time while on a taper of Prednisone and did successfully lose weight. It was a slower weight loss than normal, but I was still losing and not gaining.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

I also am on prednisone and have been concerned about gaining weight. What I am doing is to keep my sodium below 1000 mg a day, and to stay below 1400/1500 cal a day. I use an elliptical machine 5 days a week and do weights 3x a week. I feel healthy and like I am on the right track but I also have no symptoms right now which helps tremendously. I think I am so paranoid about gaining weight that I am being more careful than I ever have before with dieting and exercising. I think the exercise helps keep my energy up alot. The hardest part is the sodium because it is in everything. I was munching on carrots and looked at the bag and there is sodium. Its in bread, cheese, and anything packaged:(

I have actually lost weight on prednisone but I think it is because I got on prednisone when I was dx'd 1 1/2 yrs ago and ever since I was dx'd, I changed my diet totally. For the most part, I do the SCD diet. So, if you want to loose weight and be on prednsione, maybe try the SCD diet.

hey Beth - even if you can't lose weight, i do definitely think you can not gain weight - just maintain - while on pred. i was on it about 6 months, and gained only about 3 pounds. my trick was to exercise 5/week and limit salt and also just not give into those cravings for bad food that you're referring to. wasn't easy, but doable. I also tried to do something like eat a banana or something healthy before bed because otherwise I would wake up hungry at 4am and eat loads of junk..... good luck.
