Hello everyone.  I was diagnosed with UC in January of 2006.  I had quit smoking about 6 months earlier and the symptoms began almost immediately.  Over the course of the last two years I have been taking Asacol and have had to be on predinsone 4 times.  I got pregnant last January and had my son in August.  I went off my meds when I found out I was pregnant and ended up in the hospital when I was 5 months along.  I had to take a dose of prednisone while pregnant.  After I had my son I stopped taking my meds again because my lactation con****ant told me the meds were passing through the breastmilk.  It has been four months and I am in a horrible way - diarrhea, bleeding, severe abdominal cramping, fatigue.  All of this while trying to nurse and get up at night with a 4 month old baby.

I am unhappy with my current doctor.  The meds never work.  The prednisone is torture on my body.  I guess I am still in the denial phase thinking that I can do this without such horrible medication.

I have an appointment in a few weeks with a holistic doctor.  I am going to try to treat it with diet and some herbs.

My husband and I would like to have more children, but I want to be healthy before we get pregnant again.  And, I want to remain healthy throughout the pregnancy and post-partum.

Does anyone have any advice on how to treat UC holistically?  What about while pregnant or nursing?

natural way I hope you are one of them.

Gosh, I feel for you. The sleep deprivation may be attributing to your UC not healing. Sleep is when our bodies go into repair mode. While your son is old enough to learn to sleep through the night, breast milk digests much faster than formula and he's waking because he's hungry. If you are determined to use breast milk, could you pump before bedtime and let your hubby feed him while you get your sleep? I breastfed my oldest and used soy formula on my youngest. There was no difference in the bonding or in their health. You need to take special care for yourself - I know it's hard for a new Mom to do.

Also, do you take a probiotic?  It probably won't affect the breast milk negatively.
