So, I just started taking prednisone today for the first time (20 mg) and I'm wondering how long it takes to kick in - both the good and the bad. I haven't noticed any change in my UC symptoms, but I'm worried I might already have side effects. I'm starting to feel sick - I have a headache, lightheadedness, a runny nose, and a cough. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but either way, is it something I need to talk to my doctor about? Or should I wait a day and see if it sticks around? It just seems so soon for my immune system to be affected enough to give me a cold I never knew I was exposed to. And some site I read said that prednisone won't make you any more likely to catch a cold or flu (just infections like chicken pox and measles), which makes me worry it would be something more serious. (The worrier in me keeps thinking about that time I was exposed to TB in Africa, even though I've always tested negative).

Am I overreacting? Should I be concerned about feeling a little sick on my first day of prednisone?

You should start feeling some good GI effects of the Pred w/ in a few hours to overnight depending on how bad your flare is. The lowered immunity only happens after you've been on it a while. (a few weeks) You may have just caught a cold. Maybe while @ the doctors. There are a lot of sick people there. lol

Hmm. Still waiting for the positive effects, but hopefully they'll come soon. It's good to know that lowered immunity isn't immediate, but should I still be concerned about having a cold while taking it? I haven't actually been to the doctors since November, but given the time of year and that I live in a city, I'm sure I'm surrounded by other people's germs all the time...

I left a message for my doctor. I guess I'll wait to see what he says.

Thanks!

I had a recent course starting at 40mg and tapering 5mg each week. I felt 100% better overnight.

I would watch the cold carefully, but not get too concerned unless symptoms got dramatically worse or lasted longer than a week. Twenty mg is a fairly low dose of pred. I doubt if you'll experience many side effects, if any, as long as you're tapering fairly quickly.

I talked to my doctor and he didn't seem too concerned about the cold.

However, I'm still not seeing any positive effects from the prednisone (day 3). Is it possible the dose is too low? Or does it just take longer for some people?

I think I am steriod resistant or close to it. I was put on pred 60mg a day the same day I went cold turkey off asacol and three weeks later I went into a huge flare. I think only the cipro and hydrocortisone e's helped me (though the e's had steriods, so I don't really know).

However, I was/am not resistant to all the horrible pred side effects. I started getting the hot flashes pretty quickly and in month two began to get everything else.

That's interesting, I'd wondered if it was possible to be steroid resistant. It may just be coincidental, but I've never really had much reaction (positive or negative) to any medication I've ever taken - for anything. Can a person be medication resistant in general?

For example, these are all the meds I remember ever taking and the effects:

Flagyl and Metro Gel (for bacterial vaginosis): Took it multiple times over three years to no effect, BV eventually went away when my partner and I took the metro gel simultaneously.

Paxil (for OCD): No positive effects, no side effects, though I did experience withdrawal symptoms when I quit cold turkey.

Lexapro (for depression, etc.): No positive effects, no side effects.

Zoloft (for depression, etc.): Mild positive effects (mood is slightly improved, not sure if related to meds), no side effects.

Asacol (for UC): No positive effects, no side effects.

Prednisone (for UC): The jury's still out, but no positive or negative effects yet...

It really makes me wonder.
