My husband and I just returned from a 5 and a half week long trip to India, which went absolutely perfectly health wise for him. He had absolutely no problems, not even travel diarrhea. I was so worried about this trip, what with sanitation and food prep standards not so good in India, but it worked out really well.

We took VSL3 with us in a cooler, and that really helped, I think. I have to hand it to my husband - he really does have a lot of discipline - he didn't eat any raw foods, and he didn't eat or drink anything that wasn't fully cooked, and steaming hot. We also only drank purified water. All in all, I'm just so relieved that he's back healthy, and that the vacation was a good one.

I hope all of you had a healthy and fabulous holiday season. Happy new year!

Husband with Ulcerative Proctitis
Diagnosed March 2003, 1st Flareup after diagnosis Apr 2006
Currently in Remission
Nightly 1000mg time release Canasa
Even though he has no symptoms, he's on VSL # 3 (1 packet daily) for prevention
Was on the SCD, but we stopped after 4 months of no symptoms - he's doing fine on a normal diet

That is great news, glad all went well.
Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
Added: tumeric and probiotics.

My doctor who is of Indian origin says that coconut water from fresh coconuts really calms the colon. Did your husband drink fresh coconut water while in India?

i am on a business trip in india living with my boss's brother. i have been drinking bottled water and eating mainly traditional indian foods. i drink one or two tender coconuts worth of water every morning and i have only bled for three days this month (after eating white bread and apiece of processed cheese for 2 days). i believe in it.

i bought some ayurvedic books and they say a coconut MILK enema is effective, its a little different than the cocunut water. out here almost everyone makes their own yogurt and buttermilk, which has been pretty good for recolonizing, as it is not processed and packaged. the ayurveds suggest a mix of buttermilk soft rice and bananas as a meal blah blah i have too much to talk about. when ig et home ill write up a little report of everything ive learned here, becasue it seems to work. i have not bled this little since i got sick

i also went to the ayuveadia sala kottakal clinic whic has a very high reputation. i went there with so much hope and was totally diapointed when teh doctor i saw had not ever heard of uc. its just not common at all here
left sided
prescribed lialda
take herbal meds instead

Wow, good for you for not letting UC stop you from traveling where you want to go and experiencing life! I personally would have been terrified to go to India. I went to Northern Africa last Sept. and lots of my co-workers got sick, but I didn't at all! All that worrying for nothing. Glad to hear your trip was so great.
Officially Diagnosed with UC in June 2003.  Have had stomach issues since 1989.  Unknown if they are related or not.  Have mild/moderate UC.  Have had 4 flares, the last one caused by hormones from stopping breastfeeding.  Currently back in remission!  Only taking 6 Asacol a day.   Will take Rowasa enemas as needed. Colozal did not work for me.  Luckily my UC is relatively minor and responds well to meds, but man do those flares hurt!
