I only tell those people who I think need to know. Of course, my husband knows. And my mother knows. And my sisters know. My husband's parents know. And his brother knows, too. The rest of the family doesn't know, as I don't think it is really their concern. If my grandparents were still alive, I am sure they would know. As for cousins and stuff, though, I'm not particularly close to any of them, so there is no need for me to tell them. Most of them live in Puerto Rico anyway, so it's not like the conversation has ever come up.
As far as my social life goes, most of my close friends know.
As for work, my boss and my secretary know. I guess the Human Resources personnel know, too, because I had to list it as a medical condition on my health insurance paperwork. Otherwise, I don't think it is anyone else's business. It's not about
being embarrassed (I could care less about
that). If I had asthma or high blood pressure instead of UC, I wouldn't mention it to them either. It's just that I am a relatively private person and don't think that everyone needs to know everything about
