I have been in a flare for about 1 1/2 weeks that I believe was either triggered by a cold, my period or my taper to 5mg.  I am usually VERY nauseous but that passed and I actually "feel" pretty good BUT I am bleeding terribly today.  Every day the blood seems to get worse and today I actually had a red toilet bowl (which I have not had since, I think, the beginning).  I use to be anemic but I think I had that pretty much under control but it took this entire time to be not anemic so I think I can spare blood (or so I think).  I don't know what to do. I know if I increse my prednisone to 20 then all will settle down but I am trying to get off prednsione (which I have never been able to do b/c I get so nauseous).  I called the on call doctor at Cleveland Clinic (where I go) and he was no help. He referred me to the ER to make sure I am not anemic.  I thought his phone conversation was pointless.  I have no pain, like 8 or less bm's today but all have bright red blood.  I do have the enemas that I usually have had no luck with in the past.  Do you think that my colon is way too irriated for me to do an enema or do you guys think it may help.  I am not bloated, no rumbling of my tummy.....just extra bm's and lots more blood than I am use to.  I did get into an emotional agrument with my dad today (keep in mind, I am 40 yrs old......it was over installing an electrical plug for our microwave) so maybe that triggered this crazy blood.  I know that I am not bad enough to go to an ER and I am fairly reluctant to call my doctor because he is expecting me to do surgery in Feb because I won't do remi and other med's didn't work for me so I think he will fuss at me.  What are your expert thoughts................they are better than any call that I can make to a doctor.

Hey there--

Blood can be scary, but I try to remember what my mom(a nurse) told me about an experiment she saw in nursing school where you put a drop or two of blood into a bowl of water and it looks like there is a whole lot more blood than there really is. The purpose of the enemas are to reduce inflammation and if your blood is bright red, you know its near the bottom, so you might as well try an enema. My dr. told me to use enemas if I see blood as my UC is very left sided and is a lot like proctitis(very near the bottom of the colon) and it helps me. They aren't fun, but better than more drugs!

I hear you on not liking on call drs--when I pregnant and flaring while on prednisone, his advice was just up my prednisone a LOT and he didn't seem to get my hesitation at exposing my child to any more of that lovely drug.

Also, call your dr. just in case s/he has a better idea. Hope this helps!!

I wouldn't be worried about a few days of bleeding...I bled for like a year pretty badly. Maybe just make sure you get some extra iron.
If it continues, though, I would go see the GI.
Probably wouldn't hurt to try the enemas. If I go into a serious flare again I probably will seriously think about having my colon removed.

It's always a shock to see red in the toilet bowl! Enough to make your heart stop. (((hugs)))

Go for the enemas. Unless you've had a bad reaction to them, they won't hurt. Just remember that it can take a few days for them to kick in - and the first few days can seem worse than without them.

If you're really curious as too how much blood you're passing, try AnotherUCWife's suggestion about putting foil or plastic wrap on the toilet to catch everything. Then you'll know. A couple of drops can really turn the water colors. Or use a plastic cup or old margarine dish you can throw away.

Also, start an iron supplement. Anemia is miserable, as you know. Better to keep it from happening. If you're still bleeding at the three week mark, get a blood test to check iron levels.

If you're not confindent in your doctor, get a second opinion. This is your gut! You should be sure about what you're doing with it :)

Hang in there!

Yes, everytime i go to the bathreoon I DREAD looking in the toilet to see how much blood there is. If there is a lot I get a terrible cold sweat. What i learned from my last flare is DONT GET DEHRYDRATED! Eat bananas, drink water and throw in a metemucil wafer every day for some bulk. It helps me anyway. I really think drinking more water helps.

I certainly feel like I am alittle paranoid....that is for sure. I know that I have a fairly significant amount of pus and blood. I do put some toilet paper on the top so I can see it.......and it is nasty. I just don't want to push my colon to the point that it busts. I am not bloated so I guess that if it was terribly inflamed that my stomach would be big, right? I posted on the j-pouch forum a couple of days ago b/c I was referred to surgery and I think that their replies have kinda made me more paranoid b/c they talk about toxic megacolon and your colon busting. That has probably made the blood be even more alarming so that is why I came back to this forum b/c everyone here is very optimic that I can live with UC. I know, relaxing would be a good choice too! Thank you all for listening and being so supportive. It really is reassuring because you all live with this and I bet every one of you have been in the same exact sitation as me tonight. Thanks friends
