Can someone please tell me a good time table for taking 12 Asacol per day, a probiotic, fish oil, and multivitamin.  I know you can't dump it all in at once, but what is a good distribution schedule?  The doctor only endorses the Asacol for my son, and I don't think the supplements should all be taken at one time.  What works for you? Thanks.

I break my asacol into two doses. They could be split up into any amount through the day - it's best not to take more than six at a time. I take a probiotic at bedtime - he could take this anytime as it shouldn't interfere with absorption. I don't think the fish oil or the multivitamin would interfere either. From what I see, he'd be okay taking them all at one time. I do suggest taking all supplements and medications with food - unless they specifically state to take on an empty stomach. So maybe some with breakfast, some with lunch, some with supper - or any snacks in between. I would also suggest than he take the multivitamin as early in the day as his body allows so as not to interfere with sleep. (B vitamins can keep you up and iron gives me STRANGE dreams.)

He gets up all through the night.  Not much action, mostly gas.  It worries me because he needs his rest.  It seemed like a better distribution may make the nights better.  I thought maybe the combination may be less effective if taken all at once.  He takes 4 Asacol at a time, but everything else at bedtime.  Thank you for your post :)

I take 4 Asacol, 3 times a day; multivitamin in the morning; calcium in morning and night; metamucil around 11 a.m.; fish oil with dinner and probiotic before bed. It's just what works for me...no particular reason behind the order.

My doctor had me take Asacol (and now Colazal) three times a day. He said it's important to keep a steady release in the colon because the 5-ASA's do part of their work by being in direct contact with the wall of the colon.

I take 3 Colazal and as many of my other meds as possible in the morning. At noon I take the Colazal and a multi-vitamin. At night I take Colazal again plus Calcium.

I take all my meds and supplements in two dosages. After breakfast (Asacol, urso, vitamin C, multi vitamin, cal/mag/D, zinc, coQ10)
and around 10:00 pm (Asacol, Urso, EffexorXR, Vitamin C, cal/mag/D, zinc, beta carotene, multi-B).

I take the probiotics before I go to bed.

UCmom...your son should be on rectal meds...truly.

Thanks Quincy. I will talk to the doctor next Friday about the rectal meds. The doctor mentioned Remicade, but that seems like a drastic step to me.

At least you know the Remi is an option. But to me, your son hasn't exhausted all the basic options yet.

Request them.....Rowasa...I'm assuming you're not in Canada. They do come in 2gram and 4gram dosages.

Will your son do them?

UC Mom, I don't believe Remicade is a drastic step. When my GI suggested it I decided to give it a try. All it is is about 2 hours of medicine through an IV and the people who administer it check your blood pressure every 15 minutes or so. I'm a big fan of Remicade because it stopped 1 major flare and a couple little ones from worsening. I didn't have to do the normal 8 week treatment either it was just 1 time instances. If your son's doctor thinks it will work try it at least once before making him be on any more meds.

I did not notice the last two posts until today! We have not added Remicade or a rectal medication. Still just Asacol, and some natural stuff. Thanks!

Is there a reason why the doc wouldn't give a script for the rectal meds?
