I have had UC since 1995. Up until 2 years ago I always took Asacol. Two years ago, when I was on 12 Asacol per day and still would flare up pretty frequently, my doc switched me to 9 Colazal per day. He did this after doing my every two year colonoscopy and seeing what was going on inside. For the last month I have been doing a weird flare up. No blood really to speak of. But the D starts on Friday and I have D about 3 times per day. I take my hydrocort enema for three nights in a row and it gets it under control and by the following Thursday I am having softly formed BM, one per day. Then the very next Friday, exactly one week later, it starts again. I know I probably should have tapered myself off the hydrocort, but I hate the side effects and the weight gain. I have to be in a wedding this coming weekend so I was worried about the weight gain, too. PLUS, I will be sharing a bathroom with strangers during the wedding weekend b/c we are going in on a beach house with several other couples. So I want to be HEALTHY come five days from now. I have usually been pretty successful in getting my flares under control once they start to improve like I described above. But this time its not working. Could I try to add some Asacol to my daily regimine and see if that helps? I also take Fish Oil and one Culturelle (probiotic). I had started Prozac also b/c stress is what seems to cause my flares. I was doing great on it up until Christmas!

Anga, you might consider asking your doc about Rowasa enemas. Sometimes delivering the medication from both ends at once helps get your lower colon back in line. I'd be cautious about taking the Colazal and Asacol together, as too high doses of 5-ASA's can actually make the D worse.

You might also try adjusting your hydrocort enema schedule. Since you seem to do best about Wednesday and Thursday, if you waited and started the enemas on Monday it might give you a better weekend. Also, with your doctor's approval you could try taking an Imodium to see if that helps slow things down.

Good luck and have fun at the wedding.
