my daughter is in delaware and i'm ny. she has asked me to find her a hypnotist to work with and i am happy she is willing to try this approach for her symptoms of discomfort.
i called the hospital that serves her area, and they could not help me - i got a refferral to psychologists that specialize in family therapy and they had nothing broken down into biofeedback . i thought of calling a pain management cllinic, but i don't know who anyone is and if tthey are real. the ccfa in the area is very helpful and they are trying on their end to help, but so far nothing, any ideas, she has a car and can travel but want to limit it to no more thann 20 minute drive - she is close to willmington delaware, the nortern tip of maryland and bottom of pennsylvania- but i don't even know where to start i feel paralyzed- the school clinic is not helpful either- since their is no medical school with this university they have very little resources. i'm babbling but i feel so helpless and she doesn't know where to begin to find this kind of help either. the only gi that has been reccommended has a specialty in hepatabiliary disease, snd her gi is in ny . thanks again

I used a hypnotist to quit smoking. I found mine on a referral but you could always ck the phone book (not the best idea I know but atleast a starting place).

Hypnosis can be very helpful in controlling stress reactions and helping with some forms of pain.

Most universities have a student health service, she could inquire there about a referral. Or if they have a psychology department that might be a good resource, too. Sometimes they even have graduate students doing projects on biofeedback and hypnosis.

Is there any regulating agency for hypnotists? Like the AMA for doctors? If there is, it might help to call them for names.
Pan-colitis and GERD diagnosed May 2003

Asacol 12 per day,  Azathioprine 75mg, Aciphex, Effexor XR, Forvia and a Probiotic
Osteopenia (hip and spine) from prednisone use.  Started Azathioprine because I was steroid dependent.

If you Google: IBS hypnosis healing well -- you'll find a bunch of articles here that pertain to the ways hypnosis has been shown to help people with irritable bowel syndrome.

Keep in mind that it isn't hypnosis like "I'll snap my fingers and you'll feel better" but rather a way to deeply meditate with guided imagery so that you relax your gut.

The most research on this in the U.S. has been conducted at Univ. North Carolina - Chapel Hill at their school of medicine. I got a recommendation for a hypnotist in NYC from one of their main researchers. You could try here:
http://www.med.unc.edu/medicine/fgidc/thectr.htm

Basically, hypnotherapists or psychologist train at UNC there so that they can learn the specific protocol that worked in the studies. I can say that the hypnotherapy class I took in NYC (about 6 people in the class) was one of the best things I've done for myself. I highly recommend it!

You can also check out this website by the researcher with whom I spoke:
http://www.ibshypnosis.com/

Yes, it says it's for IBS -- not Colitis or Crohns -- but I think that's only because they haven't done studies yet specifically for our disease. At least in my case, it worked for me. It doesn't offer a cure but for coping, pain, and slowing down runs to the bathroom it's really fantastic.
