Can someone tell me what dose of Caprylic acid one should start on?  Is there a certain brand that works better then others?  I'm thinking of starting this but I don't know where to start.

I just started taking that myself. Some of the other ingredients in my pill are:
pau D' Arco (bark)
Black walnut hull
Oregano oil.

I figure why only have one ingredient that promotes heathly intestinal Flora.
I do not know if one brand is better then the other but I have noticed some
brands have alot more of it then others.
500mg caprylic in 2 pills is in mine but I have seen some with 1800mg
per dose.
Diagnosed panColitis 1990.
Current Meds Asacol x4 twice a day.
Pred for flares. I still have my colon THANK YOU GOD!!!
veggie juice-wheat grass juice--fish oil
Started 1/01/08
raw milk-kefir made with raw milk--natto--caprylic acid-oregano oil
probiotic
1/10/08 Started healthy diet again.

I use Solaray's "Yeast Cleanse" which contains c. acid along with other natural antifungals and vitamins/minerals. Watch for 'licorice' in ingredients in your supplements. Yeast Cleanse has licorice added. Not recommended for those with high blood pressure. You can get just the c. acid as well, with nothing else. If you are looking for other natural antifungals, olive leaf extract may be an option. Why are you thinking of starting c. acid?

Oh definately want to avoid licorice then! :) Because I do have hormone related flares.

Kim, a couple months ago I had a yeast infection so the doctor gave me a script for Diflucan. I was flaring at the time so when I took the Diflucan - ALL my Uc symptoms stopped. I did great for about 2 weeks. Then my symptoms started back up again - I'm thinking because the Diflucan faded out of my system. So I want to give anti-fungals a try to see if this is the reason behind my many flares that I can't seem to keep under wraps.

Red,

I wish you luck. I do think that for SOME people there is connection between fungus and UC. I felt great when I started my anti-fungus regiment. And my GI had given up and wanted me to switch to Remicade.

Red, you could be onto something.....guess you'll find out soon enough. Maybe you could also reduce/eliminate fungus feeding foods while on the c. acid. Will get rid of the fungus quicker, if you have that problem. Sometimes natural antifugals don't have the ooomph that prescription antifungals do. So, with the diet change as well, it may help. That would be reducing/eliminating all sugar/high carb foods...you know, all the yummy ones... pasta, bread, sweets, etc. Would your doc consider giving you more Diflucan to experiment if you told hiim your story? If you keep eating the wrong foods, you won't get the fungus out of your system. You have to starve it. Even with a sniff of sugar it can rear its ugly head and come alive, until you starve it to death. Good luck!!

Thanks! I think I'm willing to try anything now because I'm getting tired. I'm going to try my hardest to eliminate certain foods but boy am I weak! I LOVE bread! Not so much sweets or pasta. Bread definately is my downfall.

So which one should I start with? The C.acid or the olive leaf extract? Is one better over the other?

Hekela, thanks for the heads up. I plan on starting real slow so hopefully it won't mess with me too much.

I had a better luck with olive leaf extract..so I would suggest you try that first. I am also thinking that c.acid lead to my last minor flare up. But that could be because I just took way too much. I wish you luck.

OLE it is then. I'm going to go to the health food store probably on Monday and start an anti-fungal regimine to see if it helps.

Sherry,
start out with small dose. I have read on here that the yeast die off can send you into a flare.
When I started my energy hit the flooor, sore joints and guts. But now I feel good and my UC
was/is in a very low low simmer.
Diagnosed panColitis 1990.
Current Meds Asacol x4 twice a day.
Pred for flares. I still have my colon THANK YOU GOD!!!

about 5 days but I can't say for sure it was a die off it's just a guess.
Also my UC was not very active so I would guess if someone was in a flare
the die off or possible aggrevation of UC would be greater.
Diagnosed panColitis 1990.
Current Meds Asacol x4 twice a day.

Red, it would be really beneficial for you stick with anti-fungal diet at the same time. My die-off occurred roughly after one month. My die-off lasted one day, however I was knocked out for that day and slept it off..symptoms were fever, being cold, extremely tired, etc. Good luck.

Thanks - yeah, I was going to start an anti-fungal diet too. If I'm gonna do this, I want to give it a fair try and do it right.

good luck Sherry. It sounds really hard, but it could pay off for you in the end. I hope it works well for you, as I know you are at the end of your rope. So, I guess meeting for sandwiches will be out of the question soon?!
