Hi all
I tried to search for this to see if you already covered it...but couldn't find it. I have been taking Asacol 3pills 3x day for 4 days now and just realized that the pills are not breaking down - at least some of them - because I found one this morning...broken open but still with white powder inside - so they aren't staying in the intestine long enough to fully break down. Any ideas about how to slow that down???? confused

I would definitely call your doctor on this. You may not be getting all the medicine that you require before you pass it. Talk to him and he should be able to tell you what to do.

Good luck

That's not totally unusual; some UCers cannot process Asacol. (I'm one of them!) There has been a problem associated with pH level in the terminal ileum, where Asacol is supposed to start dissolving. Talk to your gastro about it because you may do better switching to Colazal or Lialda. In addition, some members have posted recently that a generic Colazal should come on the market soon-- so you may fare better financially, too, in a while-- if the doc changes your Rx over to it. Best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Happens periodically to me too (I'm on 4pills 3x/day). I asked my doc about it once and he wasn't worried as long as my symptoms continued to improve/stay stable. But I agree, it's strange to see this full red pills in the toilet once in a while.

My GI told me that the meds filter through the pills, and not to worry about it... but if you are concerned, ask your doctor. It does say to contact your doctor if that happens on the medical paper that comes with the Asacol, that's why I told my doctor... but he swore it wasn't a big deal.

This happens to me every once in a while, too. I asked my GI about it, and he said it wasn't a concern... UNLESS I was seeing them on a regular basis (i.e. several times per week). If you are seeing them all the time, you should definitely talk to your GI about it. If it is just a random occurrence every now and then, it isn't a big deal.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

I think the medical description paper that comes with Asacol mentions that it is normal to see some tablets not dissolved.

Hi. I just started noticing this, too. I often see the empty shell of the tablet, but a few times recently I saw the whole pill with the white medicine inside. Does Lialda break down somewhere besides the terminal ileum?

My GI says it normal to pass the Asacol pill and that the medication is leached out of the pill. I disagree! Until I stated to heal I pooped out the brown pills every time.

Glad I'm a Lialda now.

I know it wasn't leached out of the one I saw, because I poked it with a piece of cardboard to find out (sorry...TMI) and all the white medicine was still in there.
