On 12/28/08 I saw my GI for a followup and he declared me in remission since all my lab work came back normal and I had not had any symptoms since June. I was so happy to hear those words.

For 3 weeks prior to my appt I had missed taking several of my morning doses of Colozal without this causing any symptoms. My doc said this was okay since his plan was to lower my Colozal dose at this time anyway. He lowered my dose to 5/day as I had been doing for the past 3 weeks, since it had not caused any symptoms before.

Ten days after my appt., 1/7/08, I started to notice blood in my stool and on the TP. I do not have diarrhea or any other symptoms and I only have 1-2 BMs per day, which are always formed. I do not feel constipated, but could it be hemorrhoids?
I did increase my dose back up to 9/day since the first sign of blood.

It will be one week tomorrow that I increased my Colozal dose and I am still seeing blood with each BM. Should I call my doc? Could this be hemorrhoids and not a flare? I feel great except for the blood.

Thanks for any advise!!

Definitely call your doc. It is possible that your hemorrhoids(do you know you have them?) are bleeding, but if not, at least for me, blood means a flare. If I don't do something quickly when a start a flare that flare turns nasty quickly. So I like to act fast. Good luck!
Diagnosed:
Officially Diagnosed with UC in June 2003.  Have had stomach issues since 1989.  Unknown if they are related or not.  Have mild/moderate UC.  Have had 4 flares, the last one caused by hormones from stopping breastfeeding.  Currently back in remission!  Only taking 6 Asacol a day.   Will take Rowasa enemas as needed. Colozal did not work for me.  Luckily my UC is relatively minor and responds well to meds, but man do those flares hurt!

Thanks Jen!

The only time I ever had hemorroids was when i delivered my son 19 years ago.

I knew I should call my doc, but I don't know what more he can do for me. I think it's too early to start pred. again. Right?

From what I've learned from all of you, I should probably start taking some type of enema. Since I had a bad reaction from the mesalamine enemas when I first had my flare, is there any other enema that I should question my doctor about?

I don't think it's hemorrhoids. How many times a day are you going and are you having diarrhea or formed stool?

There are the steroid enemas....either liquid retention or foam retention.

Did you just go from 9 to 5 Colazal rather than taper them?

What is the usual time you take them....and I think you should up them again to at least 6 and take 3 twice a day.

When did you quit the pred the last time?

I don't see why you have to do pred without trying the steroid enemas plus increasing the Colazal....One good thing, your symptoms are pretty mild at this time. Of course, we know how that can change..lol!

how long have you been off pred? when you say you were symptom free since June, was that while being off pred?? otherwise, if you just recently got off pred, the bleeding might be related to that.

call your Doc, bleeding is my first sign of a flare. Maybe upping your colazal will help? Upping my asacol would help me if I was taking less pills then flared

I have been off of pred since March. My stools are formed without diarrhea, pain or any symptom other than the bleeding. I kinda tapered the Colozal from 9/day down to 5/day, only because I kept forgetting my morning dose. Because of no symptoms for over 3 weeks when missing my morning dose a few times per week, my doc agreed that I could go down to only 5/day. I t ake all my meds before bed.  Since 1/7 I have increased my dose back to 9/day.

Thanks all.

Maybe something like Cortifoam or Proctofoam might help. I wouldn't rush into the Prednisone, that's for sure. We should all go to med school and beocme GIs! LOL.

Definitely add the enemas.  There is Colocort (liquid steroid) enema or Cortifoam (foam steroid) enema.  The Colocorts caused me more diarhea but the Cortifoam was great.  And much easier to retain than the liquid enemas.  Also - do you take all your Colazal at one time?  Ideally Colazal should be split into 3 even doses throughout the day to make sure the amount of medication is maintained throughout the day.  If you are on 9 that should be 3 pills 3 times a day - not just morning and night.
