I was diagnosed with UC about 7 years ago and was on Colozal (3 pills 3 times a day) until last year. I had a major flare last summer and was put on prednisone which helped and my doctor also put me on Entocort and increased my Colozal to 12 pills a day. I have been off the prednisone for about 4 months now. My husband and I are going to start trying to get pregnant next month and I know that Entocort is bad to be on when you are pregnant. I spoke with my doctor's nurse and she said that it was my choice if I wanted to go off the Entocort. I went off it almost a week ago and nothing has changed so I think I will be fine off of it.

My question is this-is the Colozal not working anymore for me? Once I went off the prednisone I was, and still am, going to the bathroom maybe 7 times a day with D and urgency. There isn't any blood so am I still in a flare? I really had never had a bad flare since I was diagnosed so I am unsure of what to expect time-wise for getting completely better. Any advice would be appreciated.

It sounds to me that you are in a mild flare.  You do not always need to see blood to be flaring.  I would suggest that you speak to the doctor about using an enema - like Rowasa.  That will help with the urgency and is safe for use during pregnancy.

I agree with KTM. Try the Rowasa enemas, not nice to use, but they really helped me. One warning, I was in complete 100% remission when I got pregnant, went off my meds(stupid!) and flared at 6 weeks pregnant with the worst flare I ever had. Then, once I got it under control(I had to use hydrocortisone enemas) I stayed flare free with just an occassional Rowasa. I obviously can't verify this but I believe the pregnancy hormones actually kept me in remission once I got out of the first trimester and my body sorted out those hormones. Everyone's bodies reacts differently, but I almost went off all meds completely and didn't flare again until I weaned her at 12 months. Now I am on Asacol and all is good again!
Diagnosed:
Officially Diagnosed with UC in June 2003.  Have had stomach issues since 1989.  Unknown if they are related or not.  Have mild/moderate UC.  Have had 4 flares, the last one caused by hormones from stopping breastfeeding.  Currently back in remission!  Only taking 6 Asacol a day.   Will take Rowasa enemas as needed. Colozal did not work for me.  Luckily my UC is relatively minor and responds well to meds, but man do those flares hurt!

KTM and Jen:

Thanks so much for responding! I have an appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks and will definitely speak with him about the Rowasa enemas. Taking my meds have become such an everyday part of my life that I never even thought about them possibly having an effect on my pregnancy or a baby until just recently. I am so glad that I have this site to turn to!

No problem! This site is wonderful. It is so scary getting pregnant and not knowing how your UC is going to kick in. Mine was horrible and I seriously thought there was no way I could keep my baby with all the cramping/blood, but she is fine and happy as a clam! Make sure you have a good doc and that you talk to both your GI and OB/GYN. I got their ok on everything. And stay on your meds. Don't think you won't flare like I did and have to deal with a horrible one while pregnant!

By the way, we are trying to conceive #2 next month so happy conceiving! The other site I frequent is parenthood.com(they have forums and TTC one too!), so hopefully I will see you over there. Great for all your pregnancy related questions! Good luck!
