Hi all.

I've noticed a fair bit of conversation recently regarding anti-fungal approaches to managing UC and was wondering which anti-fungal methods you have tried.

So far I have read about the positive effects of garlic, olive leaf extract and caprylic acid.

My questions are:
  • Which ones have been successful for you?
  • What dose do you recommend?

"We are dreamers, shapers, singers and makers..." - Elric, elder Technomage
    - 2xColazide, twice a day; 1x6-mp twice a day; 1xAbatacept 10mg/kg per month;
    - 1xZinc per day, 2xScoop of Sustagen Sport per day;
    - 1xBIOCeuticals UltraBiotic 45 per day, 1xBIOCeuticals SB FlorActiv per day;
    - 1xHeaped teaspoon of Metamucil smooth orange powder 3 times a day.

I used  a caprylic acid dose for two months,
followed instructions on the bottle(s) - had
about 2 bottles, about 1 1/2 years ago. Cost
$8.79 each at health food store.
Two pills mornings, two in evenings.
No side effects,  total and complete reduction in symptoms
for over 1.5 yrs now  I dont believe im cured
of this (ulcerative colitis) but taking this
anti fungal, cutting out all refined sugars
including red color cokes, beer,  cakes
candy bars,  my symptoms are all gone.
Peppercini and popcorn iritates my colon
but i dont get bad symptoms like bleeding'
and gas, no forming , as before.

This after 34 yrs of needless pain and suffering
    -its finally fixed.

there is blessteve, those on here know me a long time,
know that the story is true. And my colon was not
damaged in all that time. I see you are already using
these products. Try restricting all the yeasts, sugars
etc out of your diet completely, - this is the other
half of this equation. And please read this completely

Well that didnt paste-- you can just write in

'the fungal etiology of inflammatory bowel disease'
on Google and the article written by David Holland MD
will be there. Some info is dated but the principals
in it have full validity.

Copy and paste in address bar and it worked. Thanks.
I have cut out grains and sugar on and off over the years and did get a reduction in symtoms.
Now I am hoping combo of good bacteria and antifungus push me into complete remission.
I really hope that is what I have been missing. I kinda gave up research about ten years ago
until my Dad sent me an anti fungus article and that lead me to this forum a week or two ago.
For 17 years I have taken drugs every day so getting off them just seems like a day dream.

Thankyou all for your responses so far - please keep them coming, especially with regard to the dose you were using!

I was seriously looking into the Olive Leaf extract, but I will also take a look at caprylic acid.

I went to my health food store today (In Australia) and was told that you can't buy it. I will have a hunt around as I wonder if this lady really knew what I was talking about.

I have been trying garlic for the past fortnight and if nothing else it has cleared up my sinus problems that have plagued me for years. With regard to the UC, it certainly hasn't made anything worse and although it looks promising so far, its too early I think to say if its helping.

I've been on prescription antifungals. Nystatin gave me D and cramping, but Diflucan worked well.

Likewise with natural antifungals... garlic caps gave me D and cramping, but I'm currently experimenting with wild oregano oil and it seems to be working. An anti-candida diet is important, too.

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

tru-believer,

I believe you are 100% correct with your theory and for me, I am on the mend in a big way. Every week I feel better and better, stools are 100% normal, not mushy or loose and my energy levels are off the scale "except" upon waking in the morning. Two months ago I took a lab test, which showed high amounts of wastes products from parasites, bacteria and yeast...since then, I have felt much better and stronger and last months test verified it by showing a reduction in those wastes. This is by far the best I have felt in six years of suffering with UC and I am only 50% of the way through my anti-fungal program.

I truly believe that even without following a program like this...if we just eliminated sodas, breads, milk and sugars many of us would see an improvement within a very short time span.

I believe an anti-fungal approach maybe the only thing that will help restore us to full health; which is something I am not far from at the moment.

Hi NBT,
I noticed that you are no longer taking anti-fungals-is there a reason for this? What herbal meds are you taking?

Sally

16 yo son dx Dec '05 and has been on a roller coaster-never having achieved true remission. On a multitude of supplements incl Grape Seed extract, Boswellia, Silymarin, Colon Health, Immunocore. Tried all 5ASAs with limited success; on high doses steroids which did not help; currently bleeding with 1 formed BM per day...rarely has D but usually bleeds!

Hi Sally,

Actually, I am taking anti-fungals as part of the herbal supplements but I don't want to list them or promote my nutritionist unless he's successful with the program. I have been instructed to rotate between four different types of anti-fungals; I take one course of anti-fungals every four days then switch to another and so on. One anti-fungal may require taking one supplement or it may require taking four...it varies and sometimes I take them before meals and sometimes during, etc.

Hi NBT,
Thank you for your response. If you find the program is successful, I would be interested in the contact info of your nutritionist. I do believe a large part of my son's problems is microbial since he was on antibiotics almost constantly the first 9 years of his life-due to ear infections, had grommets twice, etc. Looking back, the docs handed out antibiotics like candy, if I only knew. I am a little nervous about trying the anti-fungal regimen without the backing of a professional. I have been on a quest for one in the area but am willing to span out.

That  sounds like my story. My mom said I was on antibiotics alot when I was a kid for ear infections. I think my

UC started when I was about 14 on and off but got bad and DX around 19.

Sally,

I don't blame you because I tried using anti-fungals on my own (calpyric acid, carrot pills, olive leaf extract, etc.) without success before finally seeing a professional. I realized very quickly that it's not just about using the correct supplements, but you also need to know when to take them, how much to take and when to rotate them, among other things (like diet).

ps.
I also blame my problems on overuse of antibiotics, which docs gave me several times a year, annually for reoccurring bladder & UTI infections. My problem was, I had a craving for candies, cakes and sodas, which didn't help.

I will contact you when the program is done in a few months time, to let you know if it's successful or not.

Just reporting in. Its been 5 days now that I have been taking both Garlic Oil and Olive Leaf Extract, each 3 times a day as per instructions.

Garlic - Taken as Blackmores Garlic Oil, equivalent to Allium Sativum bulb, 3g.
Olive Leaf Extract - Taken in liquid form, 5mL.

So far the results are looking positive.

The first thing I noticed is that my sinuses have dried up. I have had sinusitis for as long as I can remember, and for the first time since hitting my teens, my sinuses are dry and not sore and runny. Mind you, the sudden drying up was a little uncomfortable, but not as bad as a sinusitis flareup.

Better yet, I am sleeping far better during the night (I was waking up approx 8 times a night last week). This has reduced to somewhere between 2 and 4 times now. To top it off, I am getting somewhat normal form to my stools. Even toilet trips are reducing during the day and the urgency has defiantly reduced to something manageable.

I did however cop a decent dose of the expected Herxheimer effect - the toxic whiplash that occurs due to the toxins released during the fungal die off. The D only lasted 2 days, but the fatigue has lasted a little longer. I am starting to feel way better today.

Will update again in another 5 days for those who are interested.

Shall see if these positive effects continue...
