Was it sucessful at all, for how long?  My GI said he could remove the part of my rectum that's ulcerated and reconnect it if I want to try it before getting the illeostomy.  I only have like one inch of ulceration in there so I'm considering giving it a try... I just can't get rid of this one darn ulcer so thought maybe if he did this, I might feel better for a while.

my understanding - and you should defo check with others b/c I could be TOTALLY wrong - is that resections aren't a good idea for UC-ers b/c the UC will return in another part of the colon. Given that surgery requires a general anestethic, and is kind-of long, I think they only like to go in on UC-ers if they are removing the entire colon. but, again, you should ask others. I also think there is an earlier post about this, from just a few weeks ago, so you you may want to search the forum a bit.
29/Female/NC
Pancolitis dx 3/07
9 Colazal a day (used to be on 12 Asacol, don't think Asacol helped)
150mg Imuran/day (steroid dependent, reached this dose 9/07)
Various vitamins, bit of fish oil, a probiotic.

I would be curious to see if you could find a colorectal surgeon who would agree with what your GI is suggesting. It's extremely invasive surgery for a practice that is not considered viable for a UC patient and undoubtedly would lead to more surgery. I think this topic has come up before and I will give you my 2 cents worth of advice. Go get a consultation with a board certified colorectal surgeon. Only he or she can really best advise you on where to go from here.

If your problem is one inch of ulceration in the rectum, maybe you should read up on Rifaximin. From what I've read online some IBD gastros have used it successfully to treat stubborn limited ulceration in recent yrs. It's a fairly new non-systemic antibiotic originally developed in Europe to use against traveler's diarrhea. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Thanks everyone, especially Old Hat, never heard of that before. GI is probably gonna be annoyed when I bring it up, but too bad for him!

If GI is not open minded or wants to cut before exausting all other methods then do not hesitate to take your

Crowned colon some where else.

I personaly have refused to let them cut into me. Like mentioned above, what if it pops up again further up the tract?

What if you turn out to have Crohns not UC. Cause unknown? But they want to cut it out.

What area do you live in, Princesscolon? It would likely be worth your while to consult a gastro who subspecializes in IBD, someone who keeps up with the latest info. on meds, etc. Don't let any turkey who is anxious to cut away mess you up!!!!!! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ...
