Hey everyone. At last I seem to be coming out of my flare after 18 months and have just come off prednisone 5 weeks ago and I have lost SO much weight. My normal healthy weight was 64Kgs, my flare weight I managed to hold at 58Kgs, but after stopping prednisone I have lost 6kgs and seem to have flattened off at 52kgs... I am 180cm tall (Approx 6'3") and I look like I'm anorexic...

I have been trying to eat properly and have been trying to include carbs like pasta and rice a lot in my diet. My GI also told me to put butter on my bread and eat my chicken with the skin and all... I've been drinking flavored milks, eating eggs and fatty pastries but to no effect. I just can't seem to put on weight...

I KNOW that if I drink beer I will put on weight, but alcohol is strictly banned from my diet.

I wonder if I am still experiencing some kind of withdrawal from the prednisone. All the other withdrawal symptoms seem to have passed and in general I feel like a little ray of sunshine. I just NEED TO GET FAT!!!

Any idea's?

can you eat cheese? Also try avacado's and nuts if you like the taste. I heard they might be good for inflammation also...I was scared of gaining weight on predisone but I have found that I don't really need to eat or want to much...I have only been on it for 2 weeks with three more to go so maybe that will change .........

Do you eat large meals during the day? If so, you might want to break up the meals into smaller ones but try to keep the caloric intake the same. I have a hard time gaining weight too but I've been eating smaller meals thru out the day and I managed to finally gain 5lbs. I still look thin but not anorexic anymore!

I'm reading a book called "What to Eat with IBD" and the author had a section on "safe" foods to eat to gain weight. She said adding healthy fats into your diet is the best way to add calories, since fats are the most concentrated form of calories. Her suggestions were: peanut butter and other smooth nut butters; guacamole; hummus; heavy cream added to soups, cereal or tea; flax seed oil added to protein shakes and butter on potatoes, on bread and in hot cereal. Olive oil is another healthy fat that can add calories.

In 2006 I was down to 107 lbs, and put on 40 lbs quickly by taking a drink they sell at Wal-Mart.  But I can't remember what in the world it's called.  Can anybody help me out?  It's sold in the pharmacy dept. and helps put on weight.  Sold in like a 6-pack.  Between just waking up, and taking some meds, I can't remember anything right now sorry.

You need plenty of protein and healthy fats in addition to carbs. Fish, flax and olive oils are excellent for healthy fats. Avacado and nut butters. Nut butters would be easier to digest than eating nuts. Eggs, lean white meat of turkey and chicken and whey protein isolate or egg white protein are good sources for easy-to-digest proteins.

I'd highly recommend you supplement your diet with Absorb Plus shakes. These are formulated specifically for IBDers and are basically predigested, so even an impaired digestion can get the nutrients it needs. The formula is much healthier than most OTC weight gain/meal replacement supplements - like Boost and Ensure - which often have high amounts of sugar and unhealthy fats.

L-glutamine, Mucosaheal and George's aloe will help with gut healing so you'll be able to better digest and absorb what you're eating. That's part of the equation. You can stuff yourself all you want, but if your digestion is severely impaired, you won't be able to properly break down your food and access the nutrients.

I'd also recommend you start a gentle weight training program, if you haven't already. Increasing muscle mass is how you put on healthy weight as opposed to alot of fat. It's also good to rebuild any bone loss from Pred.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999

Therapeutic dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice and Mucosaheal.

I agree with Princesa. It makes sense to put on weight by consuming healthful fats like nut butters, and olive, canola, or peanut oil. Butter & heavy cream are not the best route to take, though they may taste delicious. Be careful what you wish for-- because it's possible to gain too much weight, especially when one gets into middle-age. Working out to build muscle strength is a wise idea! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Thanks heaps for the suggestions. Have put into action and will update on how I'm going.

Did any of you have this weight loss problem when you came off of prednisone? How long did it last before you felt your body had righted itself?
