My GI gave me 3 moths of free Asacol once he found out I didn't have Ins anymore. He said that since I been in remission for over a year he wanted to keep me that way. He also told me to come back in 3 months and he'd give me another 3 month supply. He said that if he didn't have enough Asacol, he'd give me Colazal, and said they can be interchanged. My question that I forgot to ask him was this: I a taking 6 Asacol a day, how many pills a day of Colazal would I have to take? Anyone know this?

Most doctors have you take three capsules either two or three times a day.

Great that your doc is helping you this way! This is how the samples the drug company leaves are supposed to be used.

Thanks. I was hoping it might only be 4 pills total, 2 pills 2x a day, but that's life I guess.

6 asacol should equal 4 colazal....and you can take either twice daily.

At the conclusion of U.S. NIH Phase 2 Clinical Trials for Colazal, the recommended daily dose was lowered from 9 to 6 capsules. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Is there any difference between Asacol and Colazal? I thought they were the same since the doctor was interchanging them but UC in NC wrote that Asacol didn't help but Colazal was. ??

Just a warning, colozal didn't work for me and I am on 100% remission with Asacol. They are slightly diffrent, so you might not respond to Colozal. I didn't.
Diagnosed:
Officially Diagnosed with UC in June 2003.  Have had stomach issues since 1989.  Unknown if they are related or not.  Have mild/moderate UC.  Have had 4 flares, the last one caused by hormones from stopping breastfeeding.  Currently back in remission!  Only taking 6 Asacol a day.   Will take Rowasa enemas as needed. Colozal did not work for me.  Luckily my UC is relatively minor and responds well to meds, but man do those flares hurt!
