I was diagnosed pancolitis in Nov and recently started imuran (yesterday). The pentasa seemed to make the D/urgency worse so I'm off that now, currently on 15mg Pred.

I've noticed an increase in the bleeding and this morning was probably about the worse for months. Just wondering if you guys think I should let my doc know about this?
I had a meeting with the consultant on Tue and he changed my meds because he is concerned the disease is getting out of control, but the amount of blood this morning just concerns me. It reminded me of when this all started and I got so very ill.....don't want that to happen again!
Diagnosed Indeterminate Colitis 25/11/2007 1 x Solofalk Enema/day 40mg Prednisolone 35mg Prednisolone 30mg Prednisolone 20mg Prednisolone 25mg Prednisolone 20mg Prednisolone 15mg Prednisolone 4g Pentasa/day

Taken off Pentasa and now on 15mg Prednisolone, Omeprazole 20mg, 2 x Calcium Adcal D3, and started 50mg Azathioprine/Imuran.

I think you should let your Dr know about it. Have you just gone down from 20 to 15mg Pred? If so, I'd guess the taper is the cause of the extra blood - you might need to do a slower taper or stay on a higher dose of Pred until the Imuran kicks in.

My Dr made it clear to me when I was first diagnosed that I was NOT to sit at home suffering in silence and should always call him if things were bad. They need to know so they can adjust your treatment.

Hang in there - Imuran can take a while to start working but it seems to work really well for some people. My friend's Dad had bad UC and was on pred for decades until Imuran became available. He hasn't had a flare since and now does triathlons and all sorts of high endurance running and he is in his 60s! Hopefully you'll have an equally good result from it!

Thanks for the reply. I had went down to 10mg when I seen the doc on Tuesday. I was due to go to 5mg the next day but he said to stay on 10mg and go up to 15mg if things weren't very good. I went straight to 15mg but seems to have done nothing!

When did you go back to 15mg? Wednesday? And it's Friday where you are? (It's Saturday for me!) From my experience with Pred, I wouldn't feel the full effect of the new dose for about 3 days. So I wouldn't feel the effects of each 5mg taper until the third day after I started the taper. That may not be the case for you but it might take a few days for the higher 15mg dose to start working.

At any rate, you should call your Dr first thing Monday morning. You could also try asking for some rectal meds - I know you have pancolitis but some people still get some relief from the rectal meds. Anything to make any section of the colon less inflammed has got to help. You might need to try a few things to get you through the next 3-6 months before the Imuran starts working.

Best of luck with it - I hope you feel better and can enjoy your weekend.

I am in the same boat as you are.  Started imuran, tapering prednisone..some days seem worse instead of better.  Just know your not alone and we will get thru this and get better!
