Hi,

I was given Cyclosporine as a last ditch effort to save my colon in 2006. It began working immediately, and although I remember having a few unpleasant side effects from it, it was definitely what saved me in the end. Are you in the hospital? Good luck with this and keep us posted.

Cyclosporine started to work for me in about 4 days and I was out of the hospital in about 10 days the first time, 12 days the 2nd time. I've been on Cyclosporine twice.(currently on it now).

My advice....make sure that your GI and hospital specialize in treating patients with Cyclosporine; it is not a common medication for UC and you need to be properly monitored.

2nd.... have them change the IV line every couple of days...Cyclosporine is really tough on the veins....each time I was in the hospital on IV Cyclosporine my veins were throbbing in pain because I keep the iv in the same arm for too long. So alternate it every 2 days or so.

I like Cyclosporine, I had fewer side-effects from it than I had from Prednisone and it worked a lot better for me too.

Thanks this is my second day on the IV. I'm going more but I see less blood.

I am getting more stomach aches.

This hospital is very good with that stuff.

So you noticed better in 4days?

I also noticed myself getting better after about 4 days, also. Keith's advice is good about having them change the IV line. If I remember correctly, the worst side effects I noticed were minor hair loss and mental fogginess. All in all, the stuff saved my colon so I really hope it works for you too.

I noticed improvement in 4 days, it was significant after about 7 days and after 10 days it was remarkable. I went from about 40 bms a day down to about 4 bms a day by the time I was released from the hospital. I was also on IV Steroids at the same time.

Are they going to put you on 6-mp or Imuran?

Imuran and I guess the cyclosporine for a while in pill.

So how is your liver and kidney? Do you have to do frequent blood tests?

They are fine, I go for blood work every couple of weeks because of the Cyclosporine. First time I was on it they would send me once a week for bloodwork.

When I am not on Cyclosporine and only 6-mp I will go for blood work every 3 months.

My bloodwork results are good. once in a while I will have to tweak a dose for a couple of days and things will go back to normal if they are elevated.
