so I've had uc for a little over 2 years, and my mom just got diagnosed w/ Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is also auto-immune, wondered if anyone else has family members w/ auto immune diseases? Has it been discussed that some families are more predisposed to auto immune diseases

Hmmm other then my mom who died from complications of CD, there is only my brother who has arthritis - but I'm not sure which kind. But other then that, no one else in my family have any auto immune issues.

I have one aunt on my father's side who has Ulcerative Colitis. She is the only other person in my entire family that has an auto-immune disease.

My husband's mother had Rheumatoid Arthritis and actually died at age 28 from related complications. She was the only person in his entire family that had an auto-immune disesase.
Current Medications:
- Asacol (4 pills, 3x per day)
- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)
- Prenatal Vitamin (1x per day)
- Iron (2x per day)

My mom has UC and asthma and eczema (unsure if that's autoimmune or not) and arthritis. My brother has psoriasis. I have UC.

I do think immune disorders run in families.

Mitz
Sporadic proctitis since about 1985. Mother had J-pouch surgery 1983.
DX'd with clostridium difficile in 2000. Pred, two courses of Flagyl, then Vancomycin finally got rid of it. 2001 colonoscopy dx'd left-sided UC. . Treated with prednisone, Rowasa, Asacol. Asacol not working, switched to Imuran. Three small flares since in 2002, 2005, and 2007, brought under control with steroid and Rowasa enemas. Lap Chole performed October 26, 2007, after gall bladder attack in June, '07.
Daily meds: 100 mg Azathioprine and 225 mg Effexor XR (for chronic, longstanding depression), many vitamins and Primadophilus Reuteri

My daughter suspects she has colitis (not confirmed by GI) and I have colitis, other than that nobody in my family has a history of any auto immune disease

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.

I kind of agree with Maud; it seems more and more diseases are being classified as autoimmune. I was diagnosed with leukocytoclastic vasculitis almost 6 years ago. Just this past fall, a biopsy I had show "signs of diploid lupus". The biopsy was taken by my dermatologist. When I saw my rheumatologist, he started wondering if maybe the LCV was related. Personally, I just think I am starting to fall apart! I went through a bunch of different things during the past year that were not normal for me (irregular period--could be the beginnings of menopause, ringworm that turned out to not be ringworm, rashes on my face, etc). I seem to have creams for every conceivable rash and splotch on my body!

--Mom of bratcat (16 years old)--
bratcat was diagnosed with pancolitis October 2006
Current meds:
Asacol - 3 pills/3Xday, 5 mg prednisone, 2 tabs 6-mp

11/14/06 - started prednisone; 1/28/07 - finished prednisone!
3/3/07 - began to taper off hydrocortisone sloowwly! Summer 2007 - slowly began tapering Rowasa. 9/07 -- flaring? Nightly Rowasa. 9/21/07 -- added hydrocortisone enemas. 9/30/07--added prednisone. 10/31--started 6-mp, stopped the enemas. Started lowering prednisone.

Lucky me, I'm the only one in my family with UC or any other auto immune disease for that matter. I have heard that it runs in Jews, so as far as genetics goes, that may be where I got it from. Quite frankly I had always thought I'd end up with cancer as that seems to be a running theme in my family, as are strokes. And with the meds I am on and the UC itself my risk for cancer is elevated, so gee, again, lucky me.

Meesh
Diagnosed UC April 27, 2006
Remicade infusions: 7/21/07; 8/18/07; 10/13/07; 12/15/97;
