Hi Everyone,

Just looking for some advice or experience with the same problem. This morning I woke up to lots, and I mean lots of blood in the bowl after going to the bathroom. I was not in pain, nor did I have any symptoms the night before (except for being tired, and bloated) that would relate to this. It has occurred about 4 more times since then. But only when I go to the restroom, no leaking or anything like that. I of course have called my Dr, but have yet to hear from his office. Apparently he is out of town, and they are awaiting a callback. I have some Prednisone, so I started myself on 40mg this morning. My side is a bit sore, I have a slight headache and feel very tired (in the early am I found myself a little light headed even). I have been drinking plenty of liquids, have'nt had much food, just a couple pieces of toast w/jam. So.....anyone out there experience anything like this? Could this be really serious??? I'm so tired of this disease!!!! Thanks for any feedback you can give.

Hey. It sounds like you are starting to flare. I know it can seem like tons of blood but literally a drop can color the entire toliet (my GI has told me that 100s of times). Are you still taking the Asacol? 9/day?

Stay hydrated and make sure you are eating what you can. Let us know what the doctor says.

Thanks Tab, I'm so glad you said that, it sure seems like a lot when I look back and see red! I am starting to come around now. I think the 40mgs of Prednisone are working their magic already. That, or it's just in my head!! Either way I'll take it. Starting to feel hungry, and a lot more active. I have yet to hear from my DR, or his office. I'm in Calif, so it's 2:20pm here, I guess I'll give them a little more time. I am supposed to be taking Asacol 9/day, however I have been lacking in that area over the last 3 weeks or so. Guess, its it's way of reminding me to get on it. Believe me, I'm back on the med track now! Thanks for the feedback, and I'll be touch.

Darn...I hate pred. What about increasing your asacol to 6 twice daily and not skipping on it? I would prefer to eat a whole bottle of it rather than taking 1 pill of pred. Good luck, I hope you hear from your MD soon.

Yeah me too UCSFer. I heard from my doc, and yes it looks the course of action is prednisone 40 mg a day for a week, and then I can start to taper off. Will be glad to be feeling better real soon. Much thanks

You should go to emergency.
This is not something to self analyze or self medicate.
Please take care of yourself.

Judy

February 04: Rushed to hospital with severe blood haemorrhage. Diagnosed with indeterminate UC in 2/3 of my bowel. Treated with heavy doses of Pred; started Salofalk tabs and sups.

April 06: First major flare – more haemorrhaging. Colonoscopy once against confirmed indeterminate UC.

May 06: Started 40 mg Pred. Weaned down to 10mg by July 8, held at 10mg until December 20, tapering 1mg every 2 weeks, 5mg a day as of February 14. All this plus 10 Salofalk tabs daily.

Jan through May 2007: Suffering from severe headaches and vomiting likely caused by prednisone.

Feb 26 07: Started Imuran with continued success.

May 12 07: Final dose of prednisone after 50 weeks!

Hi Judy,

You’re probably right. I'm always worried about over reacting, probably not a good personality trait! I am feeling much better today. No blood at all this morning, so it appears the prednisone has worked it's magic. I will definitely head to emergency if it gets worse. Looks like you've had some experience with hemorrhaging? Hope your doing better. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes. Unfortunately, too much experience.

It takes me months to get my blood count back up to normal.

I would still advise my GI / physician if I were you. Pred does not turn things around in a day.

I agree with Judy on this one. It is serious to take any prednisone on your own let alone 40mg a moderately high dose.
You could be masking important signs and symtoms. Next time I would call the docs office back and ask if you should start the ord or go to get checked out. Any out of the ordinary bleeding for an individual is suspect. Be careful.
We have to call those doctors like it or not.
By the way, ALL doctors minimize bleeding that we report. Unless you have had this for a long time you never know. Alot or a little
is still bleeding. I bleed every day many times a day but I know how much is "normal"(HA!) for me. If I don't see blood I freak out(kinda) because it is not normal for Me.
I am sure you will be ok but use your own judgement(Except for your self dosing of pred!!!!):)
