Lori, just remember one thing; it's your body and your choice. Remember your doctor is there to work with you and if a colectomy is what you want, then talk to him about it -- get all the info you need. It sounds like you have been doing just that, but maybe you need to talk to a surgeon too. Knowledge is power.

Hope you'll soon be rehydrated & feeling better with potassium, etc. levels where they should be. Imuran &/or other higher-order UC drugs have helped several members get their lives back-- so it's likely because of case histories like theirs that your doc doesn't want you to give up yet on the meds. Take care & try to rest up between the pokes/prods. All best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Lori, I'm so glad you went in. If you hadn't, you'd probably be much sicker than you are today. Hope you don't have to stay too long.

And since your considering surgery, go ahead and ask for a consult with a colorectal surgeon. Then you'll have all the information you need to make an informed decision as to what you want to do.

Lori,
So sorry to see that you're in the hospital. Have they done a colonoscopy to see how bad this flare up is? Usually Imuran can take up to 6 months to kick in and you have to take it with the steroids before you can start to wean. Have they said anything about Remicade? I tried everything before I could say that I was ready for surgery, hang in there!

Hey Lori, I was pretty sick too when I started Remi, and now I'm pretty much in Remi Remission and happy with my decision to start it. It's not for everyone, but as I said before, you have the decision to do what's right for you. Take care, hope you are feeling better tonight.

I had my last infusion on the 7th of this month...it was my second round of double dose (10mg/kg). After a second opinion back in October and confirmation from my regular GI, I was boosted because the Remicade was showing signs of wearing off. To be honest it only got me halfway (symptom-wise) in the first place. After this second infusion I've continued to degrade. So now its time for surgery. Prednisone is the only thing right now thats keeping me from going more than 6-7 times a day (painful gas, mushy D and blood at best). I'm scheduled for another dose come March, I suppose I should go ahead and cancel that asap. I've updated my signature with a bit of my surgical schedule etc. Should have put that in sooner, sorry. Take care.
