So, I know that seeing Asacol come out the other end isn't necessarily a problem. Apparently, the shell can come out while the medicine is still absorbed.

However. Today I noticed the little red pills in the toilet yet again, but for once got a better look. I noticed that one of them looked partially split open and I could see it was filled with white stuff (I'm assuming the medicine). If it looked completely filled, does that mean I'm not absorbing it? It definitely wasn't an empty shell. As it is, I see the shells/pills on an almost daily basis, usually at least three of them.

I'm kind of bummed because I take so many of the darn things I'd like to be absorbing them. Also, it seems like the positive effects of the Prednisone are starting to wear off (I've already been to the toilet 3x in the past 3 hours), and I just started tapering to 15 from 20. Ugh. Annoying.

I had the same experience with Asacol. They were still filled with the white powder. I hadn't seen any improvement since being put on the Asacol. So, I asked my doctor to put me on Azulfidine because I was on that many years ago with good results. So far, not much has changed. I have been off Prednisone enemas for a week and a half and been on the mesalamine enemas and not doing well since coming off the prednisone.............This really stinks............

asacol 400 mg 3 tabs 3x a day, didn't work
was on prednisone, doc took me off

my GI told me the same thing and, just like you, i got a good look and i know that mine was a whole pill too.
one thing that helped me was taking my last pill of the day earlier in the day. if i take it much later than that time, it's likely that i'll see it in the toilet the next morning.

hang in there with the pred taper, hope you start to level out and feel better soon!

Munchkindd: Sorry to hear you've had the same problems.

Hekela: What time of day do you take your Asacol? I usually take mine at approx. 8 a.m., 4 p.m., and midnight. I also usually go to bed around midnight.

Also, I've always wondered...does laying down immediately after taking meds impact their absorption? In addition to my last Asacol dose, I usually go back to bed after taking my morning meds (Asacol, Prednisone, Zoloft, vitamins) on the weekends. No way I'm getting up at 8 a.m. on a Saturday!

i take mine at about 7am, 1pm, 6pm. and then i go to sleep around 930 or 10.
i have a toddler so 7am is sleeping in!! :)

don't know about the sleeping/absorption thing but i would think the bedtime dose wouldn't go very far... maybe that's why it's not getting absorbed. it might be worth a try.
