and he is going to schedule an upper gi test, and trying to get my insurance to cover the protonix for acid reflux. well i also had to ask him why wouldnt him or my gi doc put me on meds for my colitis. and this is what i was told, he said that the meds only work for so long then your body gets ammuned to the drugs then they no longer work.i told him that i understood that but if one med didnt keep working to try another and he said that if the colitis isnt flaring real bad then he doesnt want to put me on anything. the reason i asked to be put on meds is cause i quit smoking the risk to me doesnt over come the benefit of not flaring so i gave it up. so anyone else have the problem of their docs not wanting to put them on meds? i'm not flaring yet thank god i hope i dont for along time  but what should i do if i start to flare without meds?

Hi...who knows why some doctors say such things. Could it be that your insurance won't cover you?

It's good you're getting an upper series done, however.

What meds were you on for treatment in the past?

*Heather*Status: mini flare Dec 28... tapered to every second night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~vitamins/minerals/supplements
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed ....bromelain 1 - 2x daily
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux) Effexor XR 75mg;  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!

I would suggest finding a new GI, asap. From everything I've read (research and on this forum) and from what all my doctors have told me, people with UC need to be on maintenance meds always...that means even if you're not flaring. They can help prevent flares from recurring and some even decrease your risk for colon cancer. Also, that's not true that the meds only work for so long and then our bodies become immune to them. That seems to happen to some people, but not everyone.

i would love to find a new gi but here in charleston wv there isnt many gi's and once you see one no other gi's will see you. i have no idea why i have tried to switch gi's. my whole insides hurt i feel a flare a coming. i dont know why they wont put me on meds this is getting aggravating and having acid indigestion as well this is miserable. when i was first diagnosed in 03 i was on asacol but i cant tolerate that and they never tried anything new. so i started to smoke and that kept me in remission but i'm going on a month of not smoking and i'm starting to regret quitting. but i refuse to pick them back up
