On the shire web site, it shows this medication just coming out yesterday.
I believe it is the same medication as lialda.
Has anyone heard of this one yet?

Thanks

According to what I read, it's the same thing as Lialda, just a different name.

My Gawd!  Can't they for once come up with something different from the same old, same old ASA's, just in a different package???????  Seems to me they could be using their time more constructively by trying to find something else that doesn't usually need some sort of back up rectal meds or immune suppressants or steriods.
Left sided UC 3 1/2 years
Current Meds: Lialda 4 at night
cortifoam, cortenema, lidocaine/cortisone cream
Multi Vitamin/Mineral
Fish oil

I guess if UC didn't involve the rectum, rectal meds wouldn't be a part of the regimen....although, many doctors neglect rectal meds.

There's still always pred or the immunosuppressants/bioligics.

Personally I think Lialda is great -- yeah, same old same old, but when you only have to take something once a day it makes you feel a little less sick. Lialda hasn't gotten me into complete remission, but neither did Asacol or Colazal, but there is definitely an improvement with those medications.
Diagnosed UC April 27, 2006
Remicade infusions: 7/21/07; 8/18/07; 10/13/07; 12/15/97; 1/26/08
Lialda, 4 tabs in the morning; Protonix; Prednisone 4/27/06-present, starting yet another taper attempt, 1/30, 30 mg.
12/1/07 - 12/29/07 weekly Venofer (iron sucrose) injections; 9 mg Entocourt EC; Xanax as needed; Lexipro 10 mg, Rowesa; Asacol; Colazal three 750 mg capsules 3X day; Bad reactions: Imuran (2/07)

No, I wasn't on it for long at all - actually only for a few days!  But, that was enough.

After taking just 1 mezavant, I couldn't tell if I needed to pass wind or stool. Awful.  So, I stopped it, and this never happened again. So, im back on colazide.  Yes, I agree with the other comments, it's a shame its same-old.  As soon as I opened the box, I was disheartened. It was just a bigger size asacol tablet. In appearance anyway.

Hi,

I've had UC (Crohns I was told for over 20 years) and it's the first time I get better without having to go to the hospital. I was ok for over 15 years and then right after Xmas, my symptoms came back. I was devastated. And on top of this, I sold my big house, bought a condominium, moved and continued working the best I could all by myself. It was the worst period of my life so far and I'm 42.

So I suffered the symptoms for a few months since I couldn't find a doctor to help me. I finally did find a good samaritan... Two weeks ago, I've started a treatment on Mezavant (2 tablets a day) and on Prednisone (6/day for a week). I'm now still on Mesavant and on Prednisone (4/day) and my symptoms are almost all gone. I had severe diarrhea (30times/day) with lots of blood and I lost 15 pounds (from 128 to 113 lbs...). I stopped eating solid food for quite a while (1 week). I was drinking home-made shakes, soda crackers, lots of rice, baby cereals/cookies and probiotics beverages and yogurt pills. And a lot of WATER. Instead of Ensure and those disgusting ready-to-drink-too-sweet beverages, I bought the meal replacement powder that people use in diets to loose weight and I just add a banana, lactose -free milk, probiotics yogurt. Then gradually adding peaches, apple sauce, strawberries, etc. Now it's my daily breakfast. I added soups, boiled vegetables and chicken to my diet. I'm doing GREAT now. I can afford Vietnamese and asian food (and light stuff at restaurants). It requires patience and self-control... especially on Prednisone. I was constantly dreaming about Big Macs!....I cried a few times when all I could eat was soda crackers and I was torturing myself watching the disgusting food commercials on the FOX channel!

I don't really feel any side effects (this time). At least none that would make me drive crazy. I can survive most of them.

I can tell you, I've never been that serene for a very very long time in my life. I hope it will last...

I started taking Mezavant 3 weeks ago and I really like it.  I take 4 pills in the morning and then forget about it until the next day.  I am also taking 40mg of prednisone each morning as well as I have been in a bad flare for the past year.  I think it makes a big difference only having to take the pills once a day compared to 4 times a day.  Having 3 kids and working etc. I often forgot to take all four doses during the day....life is busy.  The pills are expensive but it you have coverage it is worth it, or at least give it a try.

Dx in 2004 with proctitis with a sigmoidoscopy, Feb of 2008 had my first colonoscopy and revealed moderate/servere colitis (50cm).  Been in a bad flare for over a year.  My specialist retired and had to wait nearly 6 months to referred to a new one.
Previous Medications:
Asacol maintenance dose 2004 - 2007
Aug/Sept 07 proctofoam twice daily
Asacol 4800mg (4x400mg) three x daily
Salofalk enemas 4g Nov-March 08
Now on:
Prednisone - 40mg/daily for 3 weeks
Mezavant - 4800mg - 4 tablets daily
