Hello, I have ulcerative  colitis  and I keep telling the Dr how badthe pain is in the pit of my stomache, he said the pain part almost sounds more like IBS than the colitis.  This pain is in the pit of my stomach, like below my belly buton, and it hurts so bad it makes me nasues then diareah.  Any thoughts?

My doctor says my pain is possibly from IBS because it is on my right side and back. I never had this pain until I started asacol and the pain is only there if I have symptoms. He also thinks I have IBS because I think alcohol and caffeine can affect my symptoms. I don't know that I am buying that. He says it might be referral pain which I guess is when the pain transfers to another part of your body that actually isn't hurt. I guess it is fairly common with UC. Maybe thats what you have.

Pain can be from UC, too. The severe pain I had before getting put on meds was my worst symptom...much more unbearable than having bloody "D" 25 times a day. I could barely even move/get up/walk/do anything because my abdominal area hurt so bad. Tylenol, Aleve and Bentyl didn't even touch it. I don't have IBS, so I don't know about that.

I was in a BAD flare in October...and had been trying to manage my flare at home with high doses of prednisone,  well,  one day I got a Different pain than the one I had been having...this was right in the pit of my stomach, and more sharp like pain and pretty constant that day...well, I knew it was different,  so that day (it was a sunday) had my husband take me to ER.  Turns out it was Gastritis (inflammation of my stomach liniing) d/t all the high doses of steroids.  They gave me a GI cocktail (a mixture of Mylanta, Donnatal, and Benadryl liquid) and it basically took that pain away.  (whew, what a relief that was).   They sent me home with Nexium or protonix,   and havent had problems since then.

I had pretty much the same symptoms as Christie except the pain was tolerable - painful though nonetheless! I told my GI and he put me on Prilosec and the pain went away. When I forgot to take my Prilosec, the pain came back 3 fold. If your not on a PPI, you might want to ask the docs to have you try them to see if it helps with the pain.
