I started to flare at 5mg and ran out of prednsione so I had to get refilled.  I got it refilled, though, at a different pharmacy so I ended up with a different distributor of the prednisone.  Anyhow, I usually respond really well to 20 mg and I am barely responding at all.  I have never felt nausous at 20 mg and I have been on 20mg for well over a week.  My question is:  does prednisone strength/quality of the prednsione vary from distributor to distributor?

I just called a pharmacy and they said that distributor to distributor should not vary with quality of bill.

no, drugs should most definitely not vary like that. were you off pred for any period of time when getting the refill? if so, may have been a jolt to your system and now the UC may be flaring again. I'd call your GI.

Sorry, but I respectively disagree. My daughter and I were involved with a drug weirdness a couple years ago. I was given a script for Tramadol - it made me terribly sick and I couldn't take it. Shortly after she had back surgery and was given that same drug - it worked fine for her. Then when she refilled it at her pharmacy they said they only had 4 of one manufactuer, 8 of another and 12 of another. Each of the three were different shapes and the oval one which she had before caused no problems but when she took the round ones like I had taken, she immediately had a bad stomach reaction.  So, for what it's worth - there CAN be a difference. I also believe some generics are fine and others don't work at all - may vary from person to person but that's our experience.

Diagnosed with LS UC 1984, suffered for 16 years, high doses Pred and eased off to Azulfidine; remission for 9 years, just flared recently. Asacol 3, 3x day; 20 ml. Pred.. Heading into remission again with addition of: prayer, deep breathing, walks on the beach and: 4-1000 mg.garlic twice daily; 2 zyflamend twice daily, SuperFoods RX multi-whole food vita twice daily, SuperFoods RX Omega 3; 3 Asacol 3 x day with 3 Vitamin Shoppe Ultimate 10 Probiotic; Metamucil morning and night - no dairy, hardly any coffee, lots of water and green tea. Was using L-Glutamine but read that it can aggravate?

Well, I got totally desperate and called my doctor and begged them to re-fill my prednisone at CVS opposed to Meijer (which is like Walmart here). I took the first dose of the CVS perscription today and maybe it is mental but I have been able to eat 3 meals and was actually hungry and have had atleast 1/2 the bm's that I have had every day in the past month. I will keep you all posted as to whether the nausea stays gone but, at this point, I have been sick (10 bm's, blood and severe nausea and straight "d") for the past month so I am anxious to see what tomorrow brings. Mornings are normally the worst so tomorrow will be a big deal. By the way, I scheduled my surgery today for Feb 25th.......I am very excited.

I spoke to my pharmacist about this very thing a while back - she said that although the active ingredient is identical, the filler they use to create the shape of the pill, or the stuff they us the pack the capsule with can (and often does) differ.

Usually the drug works the same, but people get bad stomach reactions if they are allergic to the filler used.

Thats what I was told anyway - and it makes sense to me.

Severin, you're absolutely right. In some cases, even the dye they use to color the tablets can trigger an allergy. Most of the time it's fine to switch from one to another, but if you happen to be sensitive to one of the non-active ingredients, you can have a problem.

I am convinced that the potentacy of the CVS brand to the Meijer (Walmart) brand is different. I have only had 2bm's today, still some blood but now somewhat formed pellets for bm's which is what I have gotten before I had perfect bm's. I have had 10 or less bm's and all water "d" for the past month with all undigested food and today is totally different. I think that it is important to be aware of this when you are in a flare. Perhaps it is "generic" or maybe outdated prednisone that I got but I sincerely believe that it had made an enormous impact on getting me some relieft that I have not been able to achieve for over a month.

Wow, I love this forum - you learn so much! That makes so much sense - what a great pharmacist to explain that. Can't wait to tell my daughter. Thanks.

Just to add. I was talking to my sister about this who does computer consulting for doctors. Anyhow, she said that she asked a doctor one time the difference between generic and the doctor said that there can be a 30% "swing" on generic. I don't know the specific perimeters etc but I do think in this case of this "prednsione" for me that the prednsione at one place and the prednsione elsewhere turned out to be totally different.

I am having the j-pouch. They are going to do a 3-step procedure so I will have to live with "the bag" for 9 months but they I hope to have a well working j-pouch and no more dependency on meds.
