I've got a sinus infection or some cold/virus and my ENT usually gives me the ZPak - Zithromax - which helps but that was before I was in a flare. Are antibiotics something that will make things worse? Thanks.

Diagnosed with LS UC 1984, suffered for 16 years, high doses Pred and eased off to Azulfidine; remission for 9 years, just flared recently. Asacol 3, 3x day; 20 ml. Pred.. Heading into remission again with addition of: prayer, deep breathing, walks on the beach and: 4-1000 mg.garlic twice daily; 2 zyflamend twice daily, SuperFoods RX multi-whole food vita twice daily, SuperFoods RX Omega 3; 3 Asacol 3 x day with 3 Vitamin Shoppe Ultimate 10 Probiotic; Metamucil morning and night - no dairy, hardly any coffee, lots of water and green tea. Was using L-Glutamine but read that it can aggravate?

I was just on that a few weeks ago for bronchitis and I had no trouble with it at all. But same here, I'm also on probiotics.

- Rowasa (1 enema daily, as needed)
- Folic Acid (1 mg, 1x per day)
- Calcium (600 mg, 2x per day)

I haven't had a problem with Zithromax.

However, Omnicef gave me diarrhea and, I think, triggered my UC.  Just one person's experience.

Diagnosed with UC in transverse and descending colon in Feb. 2007
Doing well so far on Asacol 800 mg. 2x a day
Also take 25 mg. Paxil, 100 mg. Wellbutrin, 1 probiotic pearl per day
Currently off other meds because I'm newly PG, due next July

My gut did o.k. with Zithromax, but it didn't help get rid of possible pneumonia. So I was given omnicef and like the previous post it brought on a flare. Unfortunately I was not taking probiotics yet. I will never again take any antibiotics without probiotics.

Zithromax has caused me to flare, and so has cipro.
21 years of UC which started after quitting smoking. In and out of flares which are usually triggered by antibiotics.

  • 6 500mg Pentasa a day
  • Probiotic
  • Psyllium powder.
