I've been a really good remission from UC now for 6 months. This week I've developed some loose and watery stools. The lack of bloond and mucus has my doctor thinking it's more of an IBS issue than anything else. So last night I took 1 Immodium tablet. Today all the looseness is gone. My BM was very solid with no sign of excess water. My colon is very quiet and even relaxed today.

Can Immodium really act this quickly? If this is true then does that mean that I also suffer some form of functional IBS problem that also causes looseness? Is the Immodium controlling the spasms?

Imodium can work really fast. It always works for me. I typically use Imodium if I am flaring and have to get out of the house or go on long car trips. I believe the problem w/ Imodium is it can cause toxic megacolon and for that reason can't be used daily. Though I believe we have a member that does use it as part of med. routine.

Wow it was so amazing though. It like "fixed" by bowel overnight. I only had looseness and water but it went from that to perfection. I know it isn't but it seemed to work like the ultimate cure for IBS.

I'd be interested to know "how" it fixed my bowel. What did it do to the colon to cause the stool to become normal? Slow down the transit time?

This is the link to the homesite of Immodium and it tells you how it works:

http://www.imodium.com/page.jhtml?id=/imodium/include/1_6.inc

But, Tab is right.  Too much Immodium is not a really good idea for Ibd'ers.  Occasional use is ok but one of the main causes of TMC is the use of anti-diarrheals.  So we have to be careful.

I don't know, Immodium doesn't do anything for me. I took 4 once because the 1st 2 didn't help, so I took 2 more, and no help at all for me. Just be careful that you don't get backed up. I only use Lomotil cause it works for me most the time, but sometimes even that doesn't work. If I were you I would just be happy to be doing so well and try not to worry so much.

Is there any other medicine for IBS that does a similar thing as Imoodium but is not as a toxic. Why in Gods name didn't they tell me about this when I was at my GI or in hospital!!!

cause they don't want you to start taking it daily! It does rock, I take it when I need to- if I have to go on a long drive, or an appt., etc. during a flare. Who cares "how" it works, just be happy that you always have something to rely on if need be. I'm pretty sure any anti-diarrheal med will cause a LOT of problems with overuse. It's not that they are so "toxic", per se, but that they immobilize the colon basically. You need to pass stuff eventually!

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade infusions
Imuran- 100mgs/day
Prednisone- 5mgs every other day

But surely there is some IBS meds that do a similar thing. I thought I heard people speak about these on here. I must say I'm a bit cheesed off at my doctor and my GP that they didn't even tell me about this. They were quick enough to tell me bout pred, imuran and asacol.

But Imodium can't treat inflammation. So its performing a functional role in the bowel from the little I've read. IBD isn't a functioal syndrome. It's a disease. So why has Imodium converted my bowel to perfect working order in uder 12 hours?

Vvvvvery confused.

There is at least one medicine for IBS because my doctor offered to give me some but I don't remember what it is called. I didn't want it as I am not convinced that is my problem, but Im kindof curious if it would help symptoms from UC. My doctor says it can be hard to tell if you have IBS if you have IBD because the symptoms are the same except for the blood. And I don't always have blood if my symptoms are not so bad that day.
