I have a enema question - so the doctor says I have imflamation in a patch on my right side and in my proximal transverse colon and left colon but not in my rectum. He thinks the asacol is reaching the right side patch but possibly not the left. Would enema's reach that far up on my left side? I know my situation is kind of strange. Do enemas have any negative side effects? I thought I read that enema's can actually cause more urgency and make it so you have less control. I guess my other option is to try colazal if the max dose of asacol still doesn't do the trick.(doc says colazal has a better history of treating left side) I am just worried about completely switching maintenance drugs and making my situation worse. Although I suppose it might just fix my problem. I just don't think I want to try anything stronger until I know the 5asa's are for sure not going to work. Thanks for your help....

Hi Jessica.....it seems you probably don't have UC..what exactly have you been diagnosed with? do you have a copy of your report?
Explain urgency regarding your symptoms...do you have pain/discomfort/cramping..and where?

The enemas will treat up to and the entire sigmoid, but others on here say that if you do some specific body positioning, it will do the entire left side. Worth a roll to try it.

Liquids would be the med of choice i would think rather than foam....as well, the dosage is much higher.

I've never had any problems with enemas with urgency except right after i use them....but white-knuckling and squeezing my butt cheeks gets me through the urge. I've only expelled 2 in the 19 years.

All you can do is try them to see if you improve.

Regarding your 5ASA meds...you could add the colazal to the mix rather than switching, or try Pentasa.

You have a few options left.

Are you still on pred??

Both my GI and the doctor who did the surgical pathology report on the biopsies said it is Ulcerative Colitis but at first the doctor who did the biopsy said to make sure to "rule out the possibilities of a resolving infectious colitis, NSAID-induced colitis mimicking inflammatory bowel disease, or radiation injury to be prudent." My doctor says that my pattern is strange but about 5% of cases are not typical. I am waiting for for one more blood test to confirm that it isn't crohns. The blood test is testing for PANCA in the blood.(Im not sure exactly what that is)
I have back right side pain when I have symptoms. I am on the pred - 25ml and will go down to 20ml tomorrow. My symptoms come and go but I just can't seem to completely get rid of them. I don't really have urgency problems as bad as it seems most people do on here( probably from no imflamation in my rectum), but if I am having symptoms I go sometimes 10 times a day. Sorry my post is so long.....My doctor suggested a immune suppressor next to get me off the pred. and I am worried about that. But your saying it wouldn't reach the transverse colon?

Hi...I wouldn't think it would much past the sigmoid...but up to and into the transverse...I would say for sure not...unless you were using maybe two enemas and doing a maneuver that would help get it there.

I can't see that the asacol wouldn't help with a higher dosage but twice a day...say 5 x 2.

There are other 5ASA meds to still try. Tapering the pred will have you with some symptoms I think.
How long have you been on the pred?

There is one tapering method that another member suggested a while ago...eg...25, 20, 25, 20, 25, 20, 20, 20......20, 15, 20, 15, 20, 15, 15, 15,...etc. I'm not sure of the days of each, but it would be worth to find out from your doc and see if that could work to get you off the pred.

Don't feel the need to apologise...ever...your posts are just perfect with good info.

I wish I could remember the member who does the butt lift/body roll claiming it can get the enema med through the colon...hope he/she will read this and comment.

I have this awesome picture of me in my head of trying to do gymnastics while trying to do an enema :) Then my husband coming home...
I have been on the pred for about 3 weeks. I was tapering every five days but now I am doing every seven. I think the tapering longer helps. I am doing wonderful today but I keep getting to this point and then I have a day or two of running to the bathroom. I am thinking the higher dose of asacol is finally kicking in. I have only had UC for three months but it feels like years. I get so panicky when I start having symptoms and I stress so much. I think I am just going to try and relax and if I keep having symptoms I will try another 5-asa and ask the doctor if he thinks an enema will help. Thank you for helping.
