i noticed someone posted about pain during colonoscopy, and i remember the first time i had one i screamed through the whole procedure- i learned after that this isn't the way it should be in this day and age- there is a dru and i may spell i wrong called propophal or something that sound like that -most drs can use it in their office they bring an anesthisiologist in and you feel nothing. it probably isn't always used because the dr doesn't want to deal with the extra dr-and it's less money for insurance. but you need to know to ask for it if pain during this has been a problem.

I've always had sedation for colonoscopies. Though last week i had a flex sig with sedation, which usually my doc doesn't do but i asked. It isn't something he normally does but had no problem doing.

I have always had sedation for my colonoscopies and upper endoscopies. I've never experienced any pain at all during any of the procedures. I've never had them done in a Dr. office, though. They have always been done at the hospital, in the GI unit, with a nurse anesthisist present.

I have never heard of anyone having a colonoscopy without sedation. In my home state the colonoscopy sedation is always done by the GI, not an anesthesiologist, or a separate doctor. It is true that sigmoidoscopies are routinely done without sedation but if it's too uncomfortable the doctor will prescribe a sedative.

I have always had mine done in a hospital with sedation. The last one I had on x-mas ever in 2006 I did at the hospital, but I didn't have anyone that could take me or pick me up from the hospital, so I had it done with no med's!!! I was not very comfertable, but I was done in about 30min. I did have a LOT of gas, cuz the filled me up by pumping air into my colon, but it was not that bad. I will have it done this way next time, unless I can get someone to drive me.

I've also always had IV sedation and no pain. My doctor's practice has two endoscopy centers here in town, with specially trained nurses and nurse anesthetists. He gives you Fentanyl and Versed; puts it in the IV and it's nighty-night for me.

Bringing an anesthesiologist to assist at a c-scope raises the bill by a couple thousand dollars. My dentist was obliged to pay for this at the university medical center where his gastro practices. He was furious about it & so was his gastro! A shot of Versed/Demerol is enough med for most colonoscopies. Be careful what you ask for because many states already have requirements on the health law books that are making endoscopic procedures more burdensome for doctors to perform. The best gastros may opt out of patient practice if they lose control over the process-- they can teach or research instead. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])
